Al Khor Island has a long and fascinating history. Its archaeological finds go back 4,000 years. The island was named after the precious purple dye that was once made from the murex snails that inhabit the coast. Look carefully and you’re still likely to find many of these ancient snail shells.
Outdoor adventures abound on the island. Rent a kayak and spend the afternoon paddling through the rich mangroves looking for flamingoes and other birds or enjoy hours at the beach splashing in the calm, clear waters. Travel by car to Al Khor Island in Shaqiq Bay near the town of Al Khor on the eastern coast of Qatar, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) from Doha. The trip here takes about 1 hour. The island itself isn’t accessible by car but you can wade through knee-deep water to reach it. As you cross to the island, imagine the traders, fishermen and pearl divers who all inhabited the area many years ago.
