Admire the spectacular animals of Asahidake mountain as you ride above treetops to the upper station, where you can go on hiking or skiing adventures.

Relax as the Asahidake Ropeway whisks you up a majestic mountainside toward the highest point on the island of Hokkaido. This aerial cable is a popular way to travel from Asahidake onsen village to an upper station on the 7,510-foot-tall (2,290-meter) Asahidake mountain in Daisetsuzan National Park. Fly high above snow-covered landscapes in winter and a verdant countryside in summer. Follow a trail to viewpoints and appreciate why the Ainu people called the park Kamuimintara (Playground of the Gods).

The Asahidake Ropeway climbs from a height of 3,600 feet (1,100 meters) to 5,200 feet (1,600 meters). Line up for a departure every 15 minutes during the summer season and every 20 minutes in winter. Stand by the window of the car and watch as the village’s buildings disappear into the distance and the wild mountain landscapes come into view.

Dramatic changes in scenery occur throughout the year. Appreciate the deep powdery snow that falls on the mountain and observe sun pillars, a natural phenomenon created by sunlight reflecting in falling ice crystals. Gaze across blossoming alpine meadows in spring and summer. In fall, the warm tones of Erman’s birch trees contrast beautifully with gray volcanic ash.

Walk along the 1-hour trail starting at Sugatami Station and leading to crater lakes and lookout points. Spot colorful birdlife, squirrels and varied alpine plants. If you’re feeling energetic, continue upward to the mountain’s summit or hike the trail back down to the Asahidake Hot Springs.

Find the ropeway about 30 miles (45 kilometers) east of Asahikawa. Parking is available for a fee outside the entrance to the base station. A bus service operates between Asahikawa Station and the Asahidake village, with the journey taking about 90 minutes.

Asahidake Ropeway is open year round. Prices vary according to the season, with the peak season from June through September being the most expensive. Wear suitable walking shoes if you plan to follow the hiking trail boot rental is possible at the Sugatami Station. Visit the attraction’s official website for more information.
