Surrounded by old oaks and loblolly pines, the property is quiet and offers unique choices. You’ll love the Japanese soaking tub, two-sided fireplace, fast WiFi, shuffleboard table, turntable & records, gourmet kitchen, and the true craftsmanship found in the handmade details like the bent cherrywood “cloud” above the dining table!

DOUGS WAY CAN BE RENTED TWO WAYS
Dougs Way can be rented either as a whole house with both floors (4 beds, 3.5 baths), or, for limited dates, as the main floor only (2 beds, 2.5 baths). The floors are NEVER rented separately, as we know guests like privacy. Your group will be the only one on the property. If you want help finding the other listings please let us know.
Guests have access to all areas of the grounds and the house except for 2 locked closets, the attic, and the utility area that is also locked.
The garage is available to guests.

ABOUT THE HOUSE
The big sister to Conley House, Doug's Way is an original Doug Sigler home. Doug Sigler was a well known woodworker at Penland and in the region. His designer touches can be seen throughout the house. When you are there note the tight dovetails and hand planing of the cherry wood cabinets. Our guests also enjoy the artwork, for instance the steel wall pieces which were commissioned for the cabin. These are accented with botanical prints by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and framed pages from books on architectural ironwork, plus smaller sculptures and art pieces that we have collected over the years. This cabin is homey and comfortable with all the trappings of craft and luxury. You’ll feel right at home.
NEIGHBORHOOD
The neighborhood is upscale, quiet and safe. Most of the homes in the neighborhood were also built by Doug Sigler. The property is situated above the North Toe River, which can be heard rustling along from the decks that wrap around both sides of the cabin.

VISITING IN THE OFF-SEASON
Views in winter are amazing! Hiking the Roan or to waterfalls can be spectacular with almost no one else on the trail. However, in winter (usually mid-December through February or mid-March) some businesses keep different hours or even close, while others do creative things like popup restaurants and special winter openings. If you are concerned about what might be available please ask us. We'd be happy to assist you in deciding if visiting in the off-season would be a good fit.

OTHER THINGS TO KNOW
WHAT IS THE ROAD LIKE? IS 4-WHEEL DRIVE NECESSARY?
4-Wheel/All Wheel drive is not necessary. We visited the region for years in a Honda sedan without issue. Rear wheel drive vehicles with low ground clearance (like hatchbacks and several mini-vans), as well as light vehicles (Prius and 2-wheel drive trucks), are not ideal and take the most experience to drive in NC. The way to the cabin is almost entirely on paved roads. The last 1-2 minutes is on a gravel road with one steep spot just before you turn onto our lane which is flat.
FALL FOLIAGE: Typically fall foliage begins October 1 and, barring an early frost, ends the first week of November. It usually peaks around the 20th through late October.
PHONE SERVICE: Verizon is the primary mobile carrier for the area. Other mobile users are encouraged to check their carrier's coverage in the region. Feel free to enable Internet Calling on your mobile device and use your phone over our WiFi network. ——-
