Barnacle State Historic Park

In the midst of a city, this place provides remembrance of a time gone by. Visit this preserved home and sit on the porch to enjoy its serene location.

Amid the urban bustle of Miami, Florida, is Barnacle State Historic Park in the city’s Coconut Grove. Ralph Middleton Munroe moved here from New York and designed boats. He built a home he named The Barnacle in 1891 when the city was still in its early development. Experience what the 40-acre (16-hectare) property was like in the early 1900s with conserved tree stands and Biscayne Bay lapping at the shore.

Munroe’s original intention of moving to Florida was to provide his wife, Eva, a warmer climate for her deteriorating health but she passed away after the move. He stayed here to pursue yacht designing. The first building on his property was a boathouse, which still exists. He lived on the upper floor while the main house was being constructed. Understand why he gave the house its name when you enter the main room with its octagonal shape that perhaps resembles a barnacle.

Before the area had roads, boats were the principal method of transportation. Munroe designed 56 yachts for area residents during his time. Hurricane Andrew in 1992 destroyed his last boat in existence however, a replica of his 28-foot (8.5-meter) Egret is moored near the property. Listen for Munroe referred to as Commodore when volunteers at the site speak of him, a reference to his 22 years as head of the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club.

Munroe, a naturalist, wanted many trees. This is one of the last areas where you can find a stand of hardwood trees in the Miami area. The property remained in the family’s possession until 1973 when it became a state park. Attend one of the many events during the year such as yoga sessions, outdoor movie nights, moonlight concerts and old-time dances.

Find Barnacle State Historic Park on Main Highway in Miami’s Coconut Grove. Street parking is available, with on-site parking restricted to vehicles displaying a disabled person’s permit. Admission is charged. Children up to 5 years old are admitted free. The park is closed on Tuesdays and certain holidays. Access to the house is provided via guided tours at certain times during the day.
