Grab your snorkel and take the plunge into the Woongarra Marine Park to see turtles, rays and diverse reef fish just a few feet from the shore.

Barolin Rocks is one of the most accessible shore-diving sites in Queensland. Perfect for beginners and kids, this dive site presents an amazing panorama of Bargara’s offshore seascape. Swim around the protected waters and see a huge array of marine life beneath the surface. There are several beach sites to choose from at Barolin Rocks, making it a great place to escape for the day.

Pick from the four sandy pockets of beach that stretch between Kelly’s Beach to the north and Elliot Heads to the south. Clamber over the low basalt bluffs, rocky platforms and boulders to find the small sandy beaches. The Barolin Rocks site protrudes from the rocky coast in a narrow point.

Put on your snorkel and mask and wade out into the water. As you dip below the surface, you’ll see a magnificent underwater world unfold before your eyes. Swim around the basalt crags and see turtles, rays, sea snakes and moray eels moving gracefully through the water. Brightly colored nudibranch molluscs slink along the seabed while schools of reef fish flash their iridescent scales. Peer at the ocean floor to see corals and sea sponges. If you’re lucky, a wobbegong shark might glide past.

Return to the shores to relax on one of the small sandy beaches. Bring snacks to enjoy on the beach while you look out across the mesmerizing blue waters. Behind you, a low foredune backs the beach.

If you are a keen surfer, check with locals to find out where the best reef breaks can be found around Barolin Rocks. Rock fishing is another popular pastime here and the nearby Innes Park creek.

The Barolin Rocks dive site is less than 15 minutes’ drive south from central Bargara and a 20-minute drive east from Bundaberg. There is a local bus stop located on the esplanade. The beach and diving area are unpatrolled by lifeguards. You will need to bring your own snorkeling equipment. Visit during high tide for the best diving conditions. The site is free to visit and open daily.
