Gaze up in wonder at the intricate detailing and admire centuries of works by iconic Italian artists in this vast and magnificent church.

Dating back to the 13th century, the Basilica of San Domenico is named after its founding saint, San Domenico of Guzman. Although it has a simple exterior, inside the church is beautifully embellished and holds many treasures including the remains of St. Dominic. Look for artworks and sculptures by artists such as Michelangelo, Giunta Pisano and Filippino Lippi.

From the Piazza San Domenico, notice the basilica’s modest Romanesque façade. Step inside to see the Baroque-style interior consisting of towering arches lit by sunlight. Wander to the marble ark containing St. Dominic’s remains and admire the shrine that has been decorated over multiple centuries with statues created by many prestigious artists.

Traditional artwork is not all to look for in the basilica. Study the details of the Renaissance-style wooden choir, regarded as the eighth wonder of the world by many contemporaries when it was crafted in the 16th century. See the organ once played by Mozart when he was practicing for an exam in the Philharmonic Academy it remains beautifully preserved to this day. Another section of the church contains various relics.

The Basilica of San Domenico is open every day, although it closes in the middle of the day for several hours. On Sunday tourists are sometimes allowed in for morning services. The overall church has free entry but accessing certain areas requires a small fee. Keep your shoulders and knees covered modestly for entry to the basilica.

Nearby in the city center are many other great attractions including the Basilica of Santo Stefano, also known as the Seven Churches. As the name suggests, this building complex was originally made up of seven different churches. Today view the several remaining churches, as well as a courtyard and museum. This site is of particular interest as it dates back more than 1,000 years and is the resting place of St. Petronius, the city’s patron saint.

While you’re in Bologna, look past the simple façade of the Basilica of San Domenico and step inside to discover its many treasures.
