Burrowing into the rock alongside one of the most significant archaeological sites on the Sorrento peninsula, the gorgeous Baths of Queen Giovanna (Bagni della Regina Giovanna) have been attracting bathers for centuries.
Situated in an area of extraordinary natural beauty, this secluded triangular pool is protected from the open sea by a towering arch of limestone cliffs. Furthermore, it is only a short stroll from the ruins of a 2,000 year-old Roman Pavilion. So if you’re tight for time and need to combine sightseeing, history, archaeology and a day at the beach, you’ve come to the right place!
To reach this tranquil bathing space, make your way to the tip of Cape Sorrento and head for the sloping coastal path that descends to the pool. Admire the view along the way as you inhale the sweet scents of the nearby grapevines and orange trees.
History buffs will be interested to know that this lovely seawater pool was named after the infamous queen of Naples, Queen Giovanna d’Angiò who frequented these waters in the 14th century. Happily these days you don’t have to have royal blood to bathe here, just your swimsuit and a smile!
This is a great place to come on a hot day and as it is only accessible on foot, it is often not as crowded as other Sorrento beaches. Cool off with a refreshing dip, splash and play with the kids or simply float lazily underneath the impressive limestone arch. If snorkelling is your thing, you won’t be disappointed as the crystal-clear waters are home to a myriad of colourful fish.
If all this has worked up an appetite, pick a shady spot on the rocky beach and pull out a picnic. When suitably refreshed, make the lovely walk across the peninsula to the magnificent archaeological ruins which are thought to have been the holiday villa of the famous Roman historian, Pollio Felice.
For an exclusive view of the ruins and the baths, why not charter a private boat and take to the waters around the headland? Not only is this a wonderful way to explore the area from a different vantage point but you are also sure to capture some unique and memorable photographs.
