Discover the beautiful results of careful pruning, delicate care and botanical nous in these gardens, whose flower displays prove natural beauty can flourish anywhere.

The Beth Chatto Gardens' beauty can be attributed to years of dedication and attention to detail from its landscapers.  Step into a wondrous world of contrasting scenes, where groomed Gravel Gardens are offset by lush ponds. Relish the rich colours of the Woodland Garden and watch delicate flowers swaying in the Scree garden. Pick up a souvenir from the nursery or refresh with a hot beverage in the tearoom.

The gardens were first planted  in 1960 by Beth Chatto, a gardening expert and author. This 3-hectare (7-acre) block of land once belonged to her family and was previously declared barren. Explore the fruits of Ms. Chatto's determination: a garden that defies a typical garden's requirement of perfect soil and ideal weather.

Delight in the sculptured plants and subtle colours of the Gravel Garden, where vegetation brightens the dry landscape. The Scree Garden showcases how flowers and plants can thrive even on rocky slopes. Wander the Long Shady Walk and see plants that can survive in dim sunlight. Find a tranquil spot to watch water lilies bobbing at the Water Garden, where four ponds reflect the green surrounds. In spring, the Woodland Garden comes alive with  bluebells, snowdrops and crocuses.

Take a break at the tearoom, where you can savour a homemade cake and a beverage with a view of the Gravel Garden. To learn about gardening, taking cuttings or creating rockeries,  join one of many workshop classes held here. The nursery sells a huge range of potted plants to start your own gardening project at home.

Find the Beth Chatto Gardens about 7 kilometres (4 miles) east of Colchester, close to the Elmstead Market. Drive there and use free on-site parking or catch a bus from the town centre. The Gravel Garden, tearoom and nursery do not charge admission, though expect an entry fee for other sections. The garden's are open daily except for Christmas time, when they close for two weeks
