When visiting the city of Leon, arrange a trip to see a performance at the Bicentennial Theatre. This stunning venue is one of the cultural highlights of the city and offers a diverse range of shows encompassing orchestral music, opera, drama and dance. Visit just to admire the stylish design of the 21st-century building or book tickets to see world-class performances on a popular stage.

The Bicentennial Theatre opened in 2010, roughly 200 years after the start of Mexico’s journey toward independence. Witness the results of the large investments that have been poured into the arts and culture of Guanajuato. Upon its inauguration, it was one of the first new theaters to open in Mexico in 100 years.

Explore the grounds of this remarkable modern building, which includes cylindrical glass hallways and a geometric lobby area. Walk through the building at night to see the fountains and walls glowing beneath sophisticated lighting displays. Next to the theater are the charming Jardin de las Esculturas and the Museum of Art and History of Guanajuato.

Take a seat in the main hall, a vast, horseshoe-shaped auditorium with a capacity for 1,500 people. The curve of the arena allows excellent views for audiences on every tier of seating. Contemporary and edgy performances are hosted in the stylish, box-shaped Studio Theatre, a smaller venue within the building.

The Bicentennial Theatre hosts a wide array of arts, with a calendar that includes both local and visiting talents. Watch ballet dances rooted in Mexican folklore or listen to Baroque musical performances by early-music chamber orchestras. The diverse programming encompasses shows for children, as well as musicals, touring dance troupes and famous operas.

Book tickets for shows at the Bicentennial Theatre on the venue’s website. Ticket prices vary by production, but discounts may be available for students and teachers. The theater is located near the neighborhood of Leon Moderno and many of Leon’s other attractions. Walk for 10 minutes to attractions such as the Museum of Art and History and the Explora Science Center.
