If I were to relate this rental experience to a film, I feel my journey would best corolate to the 2015 film THE VISIT, for the visit to Kay’s “ranch” made me run home and hug my mom for days after I kissed the ground of my entire apartment.
What appears as a relaxing and welcoming invitation soon takes a turn for the dangerous and the hostess is quick to exhibit unprofessional and uncomfortable behavior. Overall, Kay was a great exhibit of what happens when one does not take their medication or mental health seriously, for her texts and conversations soon turned violent, dismissive, and demanding. She became far too comfortable around us, and was improper with my male guest.
We decided to leave early after Kay informed us on a Saturday evening during a heatwave, as we were arriving with groceries ready to cook dinner, that power was completely gone. We also had no air conditioning, water, internet, or phone service. She had no generator or back up electricity. Kay only offered me an ice pack and four water bottles for 2 adults and 2 dogs.
I am disabled and my health took a turn for the worst due to the lack of safe and proper accomodations. I became sick and had to resort to using towels and sheets to clean my mess since Kay did not provide us with soap or water. Kay was insidious and accused me of playing the “disability card.” Kay even texted me that her job was more important than my health and continued to turn the water and power on and off after I called VRBO and asked about leaving early.
At the end we left running and screaming like the survivors at the end of a horror movie. We left traumatized but thankful to be alive, and vowing never to return.
