Walk the length of this Lima landmark and discover its picturesque views, moving history and mysterious powers to make your dreams come true.

Venture into Lima's southern districts and find the Bridge of Sighs, one of the Barranco suburb's most important features. Legends say that those who can hold their breath while walking the bridge will see their wishes come true. This quaint neighbourhood also features a number of pleasant beaches, parks and shops. Walk a nearby path and find a cliff overlooking the sea.

Take on the breathe holding challenge as you cross the bridge. Those who succeed can make a wish. This pathway leads to a charming park and a lookout that has an unforgettable view of the sea. Visit after dark to see the bridge romantically illuminated by spotlights. The bridge pathway extends around 44 metres (144-feet). It is wide enough to cater for five or six people crossing at one time.

Take a picnic on your walk and enjoy the shady atmosphere of the park. Bring a camera to capture natural vistas of trees and flowers. Nearby, a statue of Peruvian composer, Chabuca Granda, is worth a visit. This character brought the bridge to life in his writing. Explore the surrounding neighbourhood to find colour-splashed houses and a selection of cafes and restaurants.

The bridge's name originates from a sad tale. According to legend, a wealthy man’s daughter was forbidden to see the man she loved because he was a street sweeper. With her heart conflicted, she stood by her window and sighed as people crossed the bridge.

Find the Bridge of Sighs in the centre of Lima's Barranco region. This eclectic suburb has attracted writers, musicians and artists with its bohemian atmosphere. Explore some of its galleries, and then lay out a towel on one of two picturesque beaches, the Playa Barranco or the Playa las Cascadas (Beach of Waterfalls). A taxi ride there from Lima's centre takes around 30 minutes. Alternatively, catch the bus to the Plaza de Flores station..
