The Casal São João Cottages is a typical Madeiran stone house located in the west of the Madeira Island in Fajã da Ovelha - Calheta, about 58 km from the airport of Santa Cruz and 42 km from the city of Funchal. This construction is dated from the year of 1930 and composed by 6 independent apartments. The apartment 101 is a duplex equipped, ground floor with kitchenette, dining room and sofa bed and upper floor composed 2 single beds and bathroom. It's available in the shared social area one jacuzzi with natural water, gym, solarium, barbecue. In a perfect and quiet place with excellent exposure across the sea ideal for yoga, bird watching and astronomy.

It’s recommended to use car so you can explore the various attractions, not only in the locality as well as other area attractions. Nature turism and hiking ("Levadas") are one of the strengths of this region and Fajã da Ovelha is part of many hiking routes. Less than 2 km you will find mini-market or restaurant. The nearest beach is in Paul do Mar, about 8 km away. In the center of Calheta, about 15 km you will find all the facilities and services offered by supermarkets, pharmacys, banks, medical center, traditional shops, restaurants, hairdressers, sandy beach and promenade.

Very special experience
No hot water…never!!! Tv…Wi-Fi…jakuzi…don’t works. Melt on walls ok…insects…mouses…can be. But after all day-trip I want hot shower! According review others people…6 years is still too short time to fix hot water!

Boas vistas, local sossegado e bom alojamento
Eu e o meu marido gostamos muito como fomos atendidos pelo Sr. João, ele foi muito atencioso connosco e deu boas sugestões e ainda fizemos uma boa caminhada! Foi um bom fim de semana dos namorados que passamos na sua casa, embora tivesse mais hospedes noutros apartamentos, tivemos total privacidade dentro do nosso apartamento. Pena realmente que o jacuzzi não estivesse a trabalhar, mas fomos avisados quando fizemos a nossa reserva. Pelo menos tinha acesso internet wifi...para o meu marido se distrair! A casa não tinha muitos utensílios de cozinha, mas tinha o básico para fazer uma refeição para dois. Gostei muito do local e da vizinha atenciosa...não me importaria de voltar!

lovely location,poor facilities
Difficult to find,it would be very helpful to be met at,say,the village church,and to be led for the last bit.We were met at the property,not by the manager but by a non-english speaking older lady.The fittings etc.were very basic;only two of everything-plates, cutlery etc.if you broke anything you would be in trouble. The jaccuzzi did not work,we had no hot water and could not access the internet.We phoned the manager with all these problems but he did not come until the sunday morning,3 days into our holiday.He was unable to fix the jaccuzizi and it was not available for the whole of our stay.He replaced the gas bottle but the water was no better than warm for the whole of our stay. We only had breakfast table and chairs in our room,the "day/living room"was down many steps through the garden.It had tv music centre etc.and easy chairs and sofa,but no heating and so was no use in the cold evenings. All-in-all the place was a disappointment
