Despite being one of the finest beaches on this stretch of the Italian coast, Caminia Beach remains relatively unknown, particularly among international tourists who instead tend to frequent nearby Soverato. Seek out this small curve of picturesque white-sand shoreline, which is hemmed in by steep, rugged cliffs.
Caminia Beach is known as a slightly quieter alternative to the bigger and busier beach in Soverato. Having said that, the beach is relatively small. Because it is popular among locals and Italian vacationers, arrive early on hot summer days to ensure you get a good spot.
Rent a sun umbrella or lounge chair on the beach and settle in for a day of relaxation. Admire the incredible views of the blue-green waters and the dramatic sheer cliffs that rise up behind the sand.
The beach is somewhat sheltered by the high cliffs around it, resulting in waters that are usually quite calm. Though the beach itself is mostly sandy, you will encounter pebbles as you walk into the ocean. Consider wearing swimming shoes if you plan on wading or going for a swim.
More adventurous travelers can explore the Caminia Caves. Many caves and cavities are located within the cliffs at the beach’s edge. As you walk toward the caves, look for sea birds and peregrine falcons, who occasionally perch on the cliff ledges. Try to spot the remains of the Byzantine church of Panaja on the cliffs. Only ruined medieval fragments, including an apse and sections of the wall, remain standing.
Find Caminia Beach on the Ionian Coast, about 6 miles (10 kilometers) north of Soverato Lido. Drive here from Catanzaro in about 40 minutes. Few amenities are available at the beach so it’s worth coming prepared bring ample water, food and sunscreen. A peaceful picnic on this beach will provide many hours of pleasant memories.
