With its meandering paths, majestic trees and impressive vestiges, the Campo de San Francisco is the leafy central park from which Oviedo stems. The urban park is known for its range of statues and the fascinating ruins of the San Isidoro Church. Wander through the wide avenues and pleasant fields of these gardens to get a sense of the local history and scenery.
Appreciate the serenity amid the sounds of nature in the dense woodland. Among the tall tree specimens are the English elms, oaks, chestnuts and plane trees. Admire the ruins of a wall that was once the Romanesque frontage to the San Isidoro Church. The remaining structure comprises a large arched portal and part of its surrounding wall.
Take advantage of a sunny day and make your way across the 22 acres (9 hectares) of picturesque grounds that form a large rhombus shape in the center of Oviedo. Stroll along some of the wide avenues, such as the Paseo de los Álamos, the Paseo de José Cuesta and the Avenida Italia. Notice the array of statues and sculptures that adorn the flanks of the paths.
Attend one of the musical concerts and events which are regularly hosted by the Oviedo City Council in the park. Bring your children to the playground areas and challenge a friend at table tennis facilities. The complex also has a skating area and a basketball court.
Note that the park is open to the public at all times and is free to enter. It is known by locals simply as El Campo.
The Campo de San Francisco occupies a vast square in the heart of the city. Walk here in 10 minutes from the Oviedo or Llamaquique train stations or ride a bus to one of the stops lining the park’s boundaries. Visit some of the nearby highlights, such as the Oviedo Cathedral and the Parque de Invierno.
