Situated in the suburb of Saint-Constant, the Canadian Railway Museum charts the history of Canada’s rich railway heritage through fascinating collections, historical train rides and interactive exhibits on reconstructed railway stations. From silver-haired railway enthusiasts to budding trainspotters, this quirky museum has something for everyone.
Since the 1830s, the railway network has been an intrinsic part of Canadian life, ferrying people around, hauling goods and fur from outpost to outpost and setting the pace for the country’s burgeoning economy. The Canadian Railway Museum has one of the largest and most fascinating collections of rail-related accoutrements in Canada.
This remarkable collection includes over 10,000 rail artifacts and 160 shining engines and carriages. The exhibits speak for themselves but, if you want to learn more, visit at the weekend to avail of a free guided tour.
Start off in the Angus Pavilion where you will learn about the history of the network through a series of lively and interactive exhibits. Designed to emulate an enormous train station, this section has several themed platforms as well as a replica of the giant Dorchester steam locomotive.
Peer into the collection of miniature trains before enjoying a panoramic view of the antique turntable and railway yards from the observation room in Hays Station. Marvel at the shining Royal Hudson which carried King George VI and Queen Elizabeth during their 1939 Canadian visit. Railway buffs, don’t miss the CPR 144 – the granddaddy of all Canadian-built steam locomotives.
Small children will love The Little Railroaders’ Car. This wooden baggage car is designed to teach little ones about life on the railroad. Have fun dressing up as a station master, railway worker or locomotive engineer.
Stop off at Café Le Tramway for lunch before heading outside for more adventure. Take a free ride on a vintage streetcar or climb aboard the antique passenger train that chugs merrily around the grounds.
The Canadian Railway Museum is a mere 20-minute drive from the city centre and, as such, is a great option for a hassle-free afternoon excursion from Montreal.
