Hidden in the heart of St. Peter Port is Guernsey’s charming Victorian gardens with subtropical plants, panoramic views and an enthralling museum.

The steep paths of Candie Gardens lead to flowerbeds blooming with unusual flora, as well as rewarding views of Guernsey and the nearby islands. Come here to relax beneath the shade of the trees, visit a fascinating local museum and see a global array of plants flourishing in the warm climate of the Channel Islands.

Wander around grounds that were established in the Victorian era and have been open to the public since the late 19th century. The gardens opened in 1894 on the land surrounding Candie House and were updated in the late 20th century.

Stroll along the paths that wind through the gardens, pausing to admire the views over St. Peter Port from this elevated vantage point. Brightly colored subtropical flowers thrive in the milder climates of the Channel Islands, bringing the park to life in spring and summer. Head into one of the glasshouses to see further examples of exotic flora.

While at Candie Gardens take some time to visit the Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery. The main exhibit chronicles the story of Guernsey from the Neolithic era onward. The museum also hosts the Rona Cole Art Gallery, which offers a dazzling collection of watercolors.

Keep exploring the park to find the Priaulx Library, which sits at the top of the gardens. Head inside to see collections of books and maps with a particular focus on local life and history.

Look for statues of Queen Victoria and Victor Hugo as you wander. Revive yourself after exploring the gardens and attractions by visiting the Café Victoria or bring a picnic to enjoy lunch on one of the lawns.

Walk to Candie Gardens in just a few minutes from many other attractions in St. Peter Port. Parking is available on the surrounding streets for visitors driving to the gardens. The attraction is open throughout the year and admission is free, although the museum has an entry fee.

Come in October to take part in the Nerine Festival, a celebration of the floral life in the gardens.
