In the midst of millennia-old ruins and a cylindrical fortress rises this modern lighthouse that recalls the coast of Africa.

The Cap de Barbaria Lighthouse is an elegant and classic white structure rising from the southern end of western Formentera. A low wall forms a rectangular barrier around the lighthouse, which stands at the end of a long, gray path. Enjoy the spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea from this clifftop structure.

Set up a picnic with your family amid the grass and shrubs in full view of the lighthouse. Take photos of the tall structure, which has a whitewashed body and gray features. At night, the lighthouse glows from the top, forming an impressive foreground to the crimson sunset and the water at the foot of the cliffs.

Note that the lighthouse was built in 1971, at a height of 256 feet (78 meters) above the sea. Its name references the Barbary Coast of Africa, just over the horizon from here. Spot Ibiza, Es Vedrà and part of La Mola among the landmarks visible from the viewpoint.

Look east to the Torre del Cap de Barbaria defensive tower. Its cylindrical form rises from the otherwise flat and desolate shrubland. Expect fierce winds in this unsheltered region, very different from the pine tree coverage on much of the rest of the island. Pick rosemary and thyme for your picnic on this flat terrain, where deforestation and grazing have impacted the land.

Check out the nearby pattern of stones set up in the megalithic era. One outstanding feature is the Barbaria II, dating back 3,800 years.

The Cap de Barbaria Lighthouse marks the southern end of the western half of the island of Formentera. Drive south from the small town of Sant Francesc Xavier for about 15 minutes to get here. Leave your car or motorbike in the large parking lot.

Explore the surrounding area for other highlights such as the Torre del Cap de Barbaria, the Punta des Vell Marí and the Punta des Corb Marí.
