Also known as Te Rerenga Wairua, this is a place of Māori legend, the gateway to the afterlife.
Give in to the magnetic pull of Cape Reinga and travel all the way to the tip of Northland to enjoy its rugged scenery and tune into its Māori history. A lone, ancient pohutukawa tree overlooks the spot where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean. It is said that this is where all Māori wairua, the spirits of the departed, leap into the ocean to be carried back to Hawaiki, home of their ancestors. It’s a spiritual place, especially at sunset.
