Learn more about La Spezia’s past through the fascinating artifacts and relics in the collection in this museum located inside a historic castle.

Familiarize yourself with La Spezia’s history, culture and traditions at the captivating exhibitions of Castello San Giorgio. Explore compelling exhibits in an impressive historical setting and enjoy uninterrupted views of the red-roofed city and the Gulf of La Spezia from the hilltop fort.

Before entering the museum, examine the exterior of this imposing castle. The building has undergone various remodeling and restoration works since medieval times. However, some original features still remain. Look for the walls with arrow slits on the north side these protective features date back to the 14th century.

Journey inside the magnificent stone fortification and discover a vast collection of treasured artifacts on display. Trace the cultural evolution of Liguria: begin with displays of relics from Neolithic and Copper ages through to the Iron and Bronze ages, then follow the displays through time as they move on to the Roman era. The extensive Roman displays include objects excavated from the nearby Luni settlement. Luni is a well-known Roman city located on the border between Tuscany and Liguria. Enjoy the skillfully made, decorative marble carvings and designs, testament to the fine work of the craftsmen of the Roman era. Other Roman pieces on display include busts and statues, as well as household utensils, coins and religious objects.

After you have explored the two floors of the museum, it’s worth taking some photographs from the grounds outside the castle. From this raised position, you can enjoy uninterrupted views out over La Spezia’s Old Town. Gaze down to the port and out to the green slopes of the Ligurian Apennines.

From La Spezia Centrale train station, Castello San Giorgio can be reached on foot in less than 15 minutes. It is also within easy walking distance of many other popular attractions, including the Museo Civico Amedeo Lia or the Museo Civico Etnografico. Castello San Giorgio has an admission fee and is open Wednesday through Monday.
