Castle Park (Slottsparken), with ponds and woodlands, is one of Malmo's most well-known public green spaces. This century-old park is a great spot for a summer picnic. Admire the sculptures, walk along garden paths, browse the city library or see a free cultural event.
Edvard Glaesel designed the park between 1897 and 1900. It was originally used as the training ground for the Malmo Household Regiment.
In the centre of the park is the spacious Lordagsplanen, known as the Saturday Field. During the summer months, this area teems with life. Free cultural events, including live music and performances, are offered as part of Malmo's Sommarscen. On the weekends, locals enjoy picnics in the open fields and in the woodlands.
A walk along the garden paths will take you past various sculptures and historic buildings, all offering some great photographic opportunities. Look for the sculpture by Swedish artist Carl Milles called Man and Pegasus, which sits atop a 10-metre (33-foot) pedestal. See the Liggende Pige (Lying Girl), by Danish artist Gerhard Henning, and the Slottsmollan, an 1851 Dutch-style windmill.
The Malmo City Library is a fascinating building with its contrasting architecture. Between the two main structures is the cylindrical entrance. The oldest building is a castle and the newest, known as the Calendar of Light, is made from glass that reflects the woodland in the park.
Close to the library is the Sagoleksplatsen adventure playground, a great place for young visitors. The Brothers Lionheart fairy tale by Astrid Lindgren was the inspiration behind the design of the playground. There are slides, bridges, areas in which to climb, a lookout tower and an enchanted forest.
Castle Park is located east of the city centre and is a short walk from many of Malmo's main attractions. Three bridges cross a canal along the west of the park and connect it to Malmo Castle and Kungsparken. In the warmer months, a tram runs between Malmo Castle and Malmo City Library. Admission is free and the park is open 24 hours a day, year-round.
