The Catedral de Villarrica is a charming church in the heart of the city and a religious centre for the region. Though the building’s white façade is rather simple, it shelters precious ecclesiastical artworks inside. Inspect these treasured works and revel in the serene atmosphere.
The church is also known as the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral and was constructed between 1950 and 1958. Before entering, examine the façade and white bell tower, both striking examples of the architectural style the Europeans brought to southern Chile.
Modern windows and wooden doors stand beneath a brown cross on the main structure, while a pretty grey balcony adorns the tower’s peak. Above that, a crucifix stands. Go on a leisurely stroll around the block to study the church from various different angles.
Enter via the central large, wooden portal, one of its three main doors. Inside, the spacious nave has a warm ambiance. The interior is particularly pleasant when rays of sun penetrate through the high windows.
Look for works of art displayed in the church’s interior. Don’t miss the particularly admirable work by Italian artist Giulio Di Girolamo, which is elevated in the apse.
Even if you’ve already seen it by day, it’s worth returning to the church again at night. Admire its after-dark appearance, when the church and its bell tower are illuminated by gold light.
Attend a mass on Sunday mornings. The church is open to visitors daily until late in the evening, with earlier closing times in winter. Be respectful of worshipers as you explore.
Find Catedral de Villarrica beside a cluster of hotels and restaurants in the centre of the city. The church is just three blocks west from the shore of Lake Villarrica. Nearby attractions include the Ilustre Municipalidad de Villarrica and the Catholic University.
