Our time on Squam Lake was, simply, golden. We were informed ahead of time that the owners' relatives would be occupying the adjoining properties, but they didn't adversely affect our stay in the slightest -- it was nice, actually, to have such good neighbors, with a well-behaved dog visiting from time to time -- made us feel even more at home. And home is certainly the appropriate term, as we've rarely been so comfortable in a property and its surroundings. The calm, clear water beckoned us to make use of the cabin's kayaks, which we enjoyed, along with just hanging around the private dock or playing Scrabble on the lakeside porch with the view to die for. I was up early every day, listening to the dawn chorus, and the elusive loons, having graced us with their presence our first night, reassured us most evenings after with their distant calls. We couldn't say goodbye to the lake on our departure, only, "Hope to see you again." If we could make reservations now to come back for the fall color three years from now, when we retire, we'd gladly book it!
