Stock up on food for a picnic, buy some flowers and watch Alicante locals do their morning shopping at this extensive, two-storey market in the centre of town.

If you haven’t picked up on the Spanish love for food yet, Central Market will surely prove their passion to you. This local food market at the heart of Alicante is a central part of the daily routines of residents, who flock here every morning. See more than 200 stalls over two levels. Shop for fresh meat and produce or find souvenirs and gifts in the extensive selection of preserves and non-perishables. Whatever you have planned for the day in the Alicante area, stock up at the Central Market for a cheap and tasty picnic and chat with the friendly locals.

Step into the market’s monumental doorway and take in the full sensory experience of this bustling centre. Notice the smells of fresh fish, the colours of local produce and the sounds of butchers preparing their meats.

A large focus of the Central Market merchandise is fresh fish and seafood caught in local waters. Try some prawns, shellfish or lobster for a taste of the Costa Blanca. Butchers sell inexpensive cuts of local meats. Make sure to sample some famous Alicante tomatoes, part of the large selection of sun-ripened produce in the market.

The market may seem overwhelming but its bustling vibe is all part of the charm. Watch the crowds and don’t be afraid to chat with the friendly vendors, who are often happy to strike up a conversation regardless of how busy they are. Take some photos of the flower market at the back of the building, which maintains a large stock of vibrant blooms. Buy a bouquet to freshen your hotel room with bright colour and pleasant fragrances.

Make your way to Avenida Alfonso in the centre of the city to find the market. Taxis and public transportation serve the area, but the market is also easy to reach on foot from many attractions around the city. If you are driving, note that parking is limited in the area. The market is open from early in the morning every day except Sunday. There is no entry fee.
