Chasm View Nature Trail is one of the best places in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park to see the remarkable Painted Wall. Running between a range of colorful wildflowers and rocky peaks, the trail is manageable for hikers of all skill levels.
Start the path at the beginning of the campground loop, passing through a gap in the wooden fence. Walk the full length of the 1,760-foot (540-meter) ring path to appreciate its stunning vistas. The trail is fairly flat and should take about half an hour to complete, depending on your speed. Walk down a few steps to reach the first observation deck, which is fenced by safety railings.
Bring your binoculars for exceptional views of the gorge and the river down below. The jagged cliffs lining this narrow part of the valley are an awe-inspiring sight. Occasionally you might spot rock climbers slowly making their way up the vertical, somewhat crumbly rock face.
See the Painted Wall, the tallest vertical cliff in Colorado. It takes its name from the diagonal strokes of lighter hues that appear to paint its surface. Sleep beneath the stars at the adjacent North Rim Campground, which has spaces for picnics and tents between the trees.
You can take your dog on a walk along the trail, just make sure to keep it on a leash at all times. The path is most accessible from March through October, as it is covered in snow and ice for much of the rest of the year.
Find Chasm View Nature Trail in the center of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, toward the southwestern corner of Colorado. It is in the North Rim section of the park. Explore its surroundings to see nearby sights as the Cedar Point Nature Trail, the South Rim Visitor Center and Tomichi Point.
