Capture photos of the castle’s impressive keep, which sits within Dinan’s medieval walls, and climb to the top for panoramic views of the town.

The Château de Dinan comprises a traditional 14th-century keep and gate that joins up the medieval ramparts enclosing the old town district. It is made from two tall, circular towers and stands 111 feet (34 meters) high. Enjoy the wonderful views of the historic center from this majestic fortification.

Enter the castle and take a self-guided tour of its many elegant rooms. It contains a range of exhibits with informative plaques in English that shed light on the historic uses of each room. Guided tours are only available in French. Ask for a leaflet in English for more detailed knowledge of the keep and its history.

The structure is surrounded by a moat and a drawbridge. Spot the machicolations, which are box-shaped features on the walls through which objects could be dropped on invaders. Ascend to the summit of the tower via its many stairs for the best vista of the area. Explore the intriguing kitchen and delve into the underground level for the keep’s crypt. Gaze up at the impressive 15th-century artillery structure, the Coëtquen Tower.

Building commenced on the castle in 1382. It was built by Duke of Brittany John IV. It is also known as the Keep of Duchess Anne. Consider how the structure was built with the dual purpose of protecting the city from attackers and subduing uprisings from within.

The keep’s museum opens daily from morning until late afternoon March through December, with shorter hours in winter. There is a fee for entry, with reduced prices for students and children.

The Château de Dinan is near the St. Louis Gate in the southern part of the historic center of Dinan. It is the dividing line between the old town and the outskirts. See some of the nearby attractions, including the Basilique Saint-Sauveur, the Town Hall and the Théâtre des Jacobins.
