Inside one of Oviedo’s landmarks you’ll find opulent decoration outside it’s hard not to notice the building’s uneven appearance due to the lack of a second bell tower.

Looming over the spacious Plaza de la Constitución, the Church of San Isidoro is a 16th-century structure with an exceptional design and reddish exterior. With only one bell tower, the church has a lopsided appearance. Snap photos of this spectacular building, one of Oviedo’s most important religious structures.

Notice the narrow columns and semicircular arch that frame the main doorway at the center of the façade. Examine the intricate carvings of the pediment above the portal. Gaze up at the sole tower on the side of the church. Although a second tower was planned, it was never built.

Enter through the main portal and walk along the black-and-white checkered floor. Marvel at the Baroque altarpieces that portray the images of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Holy Christ Reclining. Inspect the great array of religious works of art that adorn the walls of the church’s interior. Attend a Mass service here for a glimpse into the local culture and practices.

Note that the construction of the church commenced in 1576, before being completed in 1681. It was initially part of the College of San Matías and is thought that local architect Juan de Tolosa designed the ground floor and façade of the first floor. The church’s previous incarnation stood in the nearby Plaza del Paraguas, and its crumbling façade can today be seen in the Campo de San Francisco park.

The church opens daily from morning until early afternoon and then again for 1 or 2 hours in the evening. You can also do a virtual visit on the church’s official website.

The Church of San Isidoro is in the old town district in the center of Oviedo. Take a bus to a nearby stop and traverse the quaint alleys of the historic center on foot. Go to some of the neighboring attractions, including the Plaza del Paraguas, the Casa Natal de Indalecio Prieto and the Palacio de Bernaldo Quirós.
