Experience the serenity of a far-flung beach that promises some of the best views on the spectacular Isle of Skye.

Claigan Coral Beach can stake a serious claim to being the most beautiful beach on the Isle of Skye. Fine white sand rolls into the tranquil, crystalline waters of a sea loch, offering peaceful views of Dunvegan Head. The beach is also known for the unusual “coral” that is scattered across the sand, although it is actually dried and bleached seaweed.

Amble to the beach along a pleasant path that leads away from the car park. This lovely walk is easy and crosses some farmland and fields before reaching the beach. The first destination you reach is Camas Ban, a stretch of fine white sand. Carry on past this to find the coral beach.

Examine the coral-like shells beneath your feet. These are the remnants of fossilized leaves of a seaweed known as maërl, which grows in the area. Hunt for colorful shells across the beach or look for the biggest piece of dried maërl. In order to preserve the beauty of the beach, leave every shell and coral piece where you find it.

Relax and gaze out over Loch Dunvegan, a sea inlet that comes in between Claigan and the Dunvegan peninsula. Bring food for a barbecue in this popular picnic spot. While you enjoy your meal, watch for seals playing in the calm waters of the sea.

When the tide is furthest out, wander across to the tidal island of Lampay. This is where the maërl grows. See the beautiful red color it has before it dries and bleaches on the beach.

A small hill known as the Ghrobain sits on the edge of the beach. Embark on the 5-minute climb to the top and you will be rewarded with stunning views of the coast, Lampay and the loch.

The parking lot at Claigan Coral Beach is about an hour away from Broadford and 45 minutes from Portree. Nearby Dunvegan Castle is a dramatic, family-friendly attraction on the edge of the loch. Come back here in the evening to watch a spectacular sunset over Dunvegan Head.

We drove all the way out there on a poor road and there was no parking so had to drive back. There were a lot of vehicles that had to turn back.
