Copacabana Fort Tours and Activities

Copacabana Fort

Visit this historic fort at the south end of Copacabana Beach to learn about Brazil’s military history through many fascinating displays and artifacts.

Copacabana Fort is a former military stronghold with outstanding views of Rio de Janeiro and Guanabara Bay. The fort contains a museum, which displays wax sculptures and rare military items, including uniforms and weapons. Spend an afternoon exploring the historic fort before heading to Copacabana, one of Rio’s most lively neighborhoods.

Study the fort’s two 12-inch (305-milimeter) Krupp cannons, capable of hitting targets 14 miles (23 kilometers) away. Many additional artillery pieces are displayed at Copacabana Fort, including a quick-firing field gun, known as a Hotchkiss five-barrel revolving cannon. The fort also displays a British-made Vickers-Armstrong Mark XIX 6-inch (15-centimeter) gun, installed for coastal defense.

The stronghold was built in the early 20th century as one of Rio de Janeiro’s main defense systems. At the time of its construction, it was considered the most advanced fortification in Latin America. Notice Copacabana Fort’s original features, including iron-plated windows and 39-foot-thick (12-meter) walls. Copacabana Fort also contains many interesting rooms, such as the guards’ accommodations and the prison.

Brazil’s military history is preserved in the fort’s Army Historical Museum, spanning several halls and floors. The museum features permanent and changing displays on the colonial period, territorial invasions and more. Study an exhibit on Brazil’s military presidents and see weapons, uniforms, photographs and other artifacts relating to the history of the Brazilian Army.

Stop at the fort’s bar and restaurant for light meals with outstanding views of the nearby Copacabana Beach. The famous beach is great for relaxing, sunbathing, swimming and volleyball. Spend a few hours exploring the fort and then head to the beach for oceanfront bars serving draft beer and Brazilian street food, such as hearty stews, called feijoadas.

Find the fort at the south end of Copacabana Beach, about 16 miles (26 kilometers) from Rio de Janeiro - Galeão International Airport. The fort is open year-round, Tuesday to Sunday. Discounted admission rates apply for seniors and students.

With many historic military artifacts and spectacular views of Rio de Janeiro, Copacabana Fort is one of the city’s highlight attractions.
