The setting:
This recently renovated, luxury mountain home is situated just west of the town of Crested Butte on the flank of CB's most iconic peak, Red Lady. Surrounded by mountain meadows, towering forests of old-growth pines and aspens, and stunning views, this property allows you to take in the wild majesty of the Elk Mountains in your own private sanctuary, while enjoying all the convenience and creature comforts of home just 5 minutes from all the amenities of Elk Street. Immediate access to a wide variety of outdoor activities; the area is famous for its many and varied trails for biking, hiking, and horse riding, mountain lakes, mining towns, wildflowers, and of course world class skiing.
Take a stroll across the footbridge to your private alpine meadow, perfect for flower gazing, wildlife viewing, hiking or snowshoeing, or creating the ultimate sledding park! Or keep going and hike up the flanks of Red Lady. Beyond that is Kebler Pass, famed for its views and access to the backcountry. The wilderness around this home feels virtually limitless.
The house:
This house is set up for comfort and relaxation. Enjoy a glass of wine on the deck, in the brand new hot tub, or tucked into a cozy couch in front of one of the 3 fireplaces while the kids are downstairs watching a movie on the wide screen TV or playing games in the fully stocked game room (arcade table, foosball, and darts). A STARLINK satellite and mesh network provides robust Wi-Fi throughout the home; capable of handling dozens of devices.
Upon walking in the front door and walking up one flight of stairs, you'll find the inviting spacious open plan. The kitchen/dining area is centered around a spacious island with stools and a casual table that seats 8-10. Make use of the large, recently remodeled kitchen, complete with all new appliances and everything you need to either summon your inner chef or warm up one of the many take out options from town. This area is complemented by a cozy seating area with fireplace and access to the deck.
Walk through the french doors flanking the fireplace to a spacious second story deck with a gas grill, table and chairs, and private views as far as the eye can see. Whetstone and Axtell peaks frame the horizon. You are wrapped in total seclusion with no other homes or commercial activities to be seen or heard; a sense of quiet that is hard to find!
Also on the main floor, you'll find the more formal dining area with a table that comfortably seats 10. The living room has a vaulted ceiling, large windows, a gas fireplace, and comfortable seating for 10.
Down an open stairway is the rec room, which boasts a plethora of fun: including a large smart TV, sound system, an electronic dart board, loads of boards games, wet bar, ping pong table, foosball table and PacMan arcade game table. A gas fireplace, inviting couch, oversized recliners, two daybeds, and full bathroom are all also located in this downstairs area. Get ready for serious negotiations over who gets to sleep here!
On the main floor, opposite from the main living room is the master suite with en suite beautifully remodeled bathroom with double vanities, a soaking tub and oversized shower. The master has a king size bed, a work desk, and walk-in closet.
Above the kitchen/dining area is a cozy enclosed loft space that looks out on the aspen grove on the north side of the house. This bedroom has 3 twin beds, a smart TV, and armoire. The powder room is just down the stairs.
On the ground floor/entrance level, there are two more guest rooms that share a bathroom. One room has a queen bed and the other has a king bed. Each room has a closet, drawers and plenty of room to make yourselves at home. The King room has a smart TV.
Beside the main entrance is a climate controlled two-car garage with cubbies for boots and helmets, hooks for outerwear, bins for ski poles, ski rack, as well as a heated rack for drying clothes and gear, plenty of outlets for various charging and drying devices, and an extra full-size refrigerator. This is also one access point to the hot tub.
The hot tub is located out the back door under the porch – positioned thus as shelter from the hundreds of inches of powder that annually blanket this area. The tub seats 7 people and has an array of massaging jets; it is just a few steps from the back door, and specially equipped with a lid that is easy to operate.
Aside from the two-car garage, there is ample additional parking in the driveway and in front of the barn. There is an adjustable basketball hoop and outdoor equipment such as Frisbees, sleds, and various balls. Note: The separate barn is locked and not accessible by guests.
Please note that the short trip to and from the property – however stunningly gorgeous – is a long and winding road, with 600 feet of elevation from town. The road and driveway are maintained and professional road crews clear the snow. Still, a 4WD/AWD vehicle is necessary during the winter months; “be prepared” is always a good motto to live by at 9000 feet!
The road to downtown Crested Butte is 2 miles downhill; just 5 minutes by car or bike; 30-45 minutes on foot.
The town:
The town of Crested Butte, once a mining town, became a secret gold mine for skiers in the late 60s. A registered National Historic District, the quaint pioneer feel of the town has been carefully preserved by subtle renovations of its miner cabins and famous Elk Avenue. The town has kept its classic ski town ambiance with a blend of colorful locals and visiting city folk, both equally protective of preserving this out of the limelight gem.
Crested Butte is popular throughout the year. In winter, it’s known as “the last great American ski town”, (Aspen in its heyday) beloved for its off-the-beaten-track chill atmosphere, local taverns, great food, powder, and infamous steeps. In summer, it’s dubbed “the wildflower capitol of Colorado”, home to a continuous parade of music festivals, art shows, weekend farmers’ market, and a growing film festival. In autumn, the town is surrounded by mountain valleys, rivers, endless golden expanses of quaking aspens and wilderness just waiting to be explored. For its small size and remote location, CB is bursting with a great variety of community events throughout the year, at any of the many music venues, the CB Center for the Arts, and the historic Majestic Theatre. Similarly, CB supports an outsized range and variety of high quality restaurants.
Some other highlights out your back door are: Crested Butte Mountain Resort (recently purchased by Vail and included on the Epic Pass); professionally guided backcountry adventures; top notch golf at the Crested Butte Country Club; white water rafting; renowned fly fishing on the Slate, East, Taylor, and Gunnison rivers; horseback riding, hiking, biking, camping, rock climbing, paragliding….
