Take time out from sightseeing to stop for a few drinks in this world-famous pub, a masterpiece of Victorian design that is beautiful inside and out.

Belfast certainly has no shortage of outstanding drinking spots, but the Crown Liquor Saloon is in a league of its own when it comes to character and charm. Step through its doors and enter a world that belongs to another era. This building is such a perfectly preserved example of Victorian architecture and design that it is now owned and protected by the National Trust, which cares for important historic sites.

The Crown Liquor Saloon was built in 1826 and was one of the most renowned gin palaces of its day. Come here today and see how its gorgeous Victorian features have been carefully protected and painstakingly restored. Stand outside the building to admire the intricate multi-colored tiles that cover the façade. See the quaint lettering along the top of the pub, where the names of some of the available drinks are listed.

Head inside and see how closely the unique design of the exterior matches the interior. Dark wood panels divide the booths, while the bar itself is a marvel of ornate carving. The ceiling is decorated with beautiful shades of red and gold and the mosaic tiles of the floor are art objects in themselves. The beauty of the pub is reflected in gorgeous antique mirrors scattered throughout.

Yet despite all of this splendor, the pub still feels cozy accessible and very laid-back. This is a community social hub, not an upscale cocktail bar. Stop here to sample the wide array of real ales offered, some of them very unusual indeed. Try some classic Irish pub food, which is so rich and filling that it’s the perfect fuel for a busy day of sightseeing.

Stay in one of the many hotels and hostels clustered near the Crown Liquor Saloon to have easy access to this lovely spot, as well as central Belfast’s many other sightseeing and nightlife attractions. Come from farther afield and get the train to Great Victoria Street Station, which is a 3-minute walk east. Either way, make sure you include this Victorian gem on your Belfast itinerary.
