There is so much to do on the island.
Sand Island is nearby and is one of the most popular destinations for our boating guests for fun and relaxation. You can actually walk onto part of Sand Island from one of the public beaches at mid island. Fishing, water sports, collecting seashells or just sitting in the water with a cool refreshment is the order of the day there.
Or you can just head to one of the many public or semi-private beaches on the island. Bring your beach chairs, umbrella, sunscreen, fishing pole(s) and refreshments and enjoy the sun, surf and sand. Did someone say sandcastles and seashells?
You can also charter most any size boat for fishing, cruising, dolphin watching, etc. And you can also rent pontoon boats at the Dauphin Island Marina.
We might also suggest a visit to the DI Sea Lab and Estuarium. Great for the entire family. Don't miss it. There is also 200 year old Fort Gaines, a Civil War fort that is full of history. Remember, Admiral Farragut's famous quote, "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead"? It happened here!
Don't miss the bird sanctuary which is a great place to stroll, hang out and look for many interesting birds and wildlife. And the nearby "Indian Mounds" is a great place to visit, be close to nature and look for birds and interesting creatures.
There is also the old "Little Red School House" which has been remodeled and is now a great community center complete with much history. It has free internet, computers and a huge lending library for the kids as well as the grown-ups. A must stop for information and fun as you explore the island. Great island info there.
There is also a golf course, tennis courts, beach, pool and family friendly bar at the Isle Dauphine Golf Club. As island guests, you are welcome to enjoy these amenities (they charge a small fee). They also have a great restaurant there (Pirates's Bar & Grill) with great breakfasts, lunches and dinners along with a beautiful view of the sand dunes and Gulf. There are also a few other terrific restaurants on the island, all with great local. fresh seafood for your enjoyment Capt'n Snapper's, Dority's, Islanders, Pelican Pub, and a few more. Or you can purchase some local shrimp and seafood at Skinner's Seafood on the island and cook it up for yourself or they will gladly steam if for you while you wait. There are also several ice cream and snow cone spots for the little ones, or not so little ones!
The West End of the island is where you'll find a large public beach with air conditioned restrooms, snacks, drinks and endless sand and surf. On most weekends they have outdoor movies (Friday nights) and music (bring your beach chairs!). (NOTE: The west end may be under repair due to the hurricanes last season.) Also, check at "little red schoolhouse" as the movie location sometimes is at the east end of the island near Fort Gaines.
There is also a public beach on the East end of the island adjacent to historic Fort Gaines. There are also several public beaches up and down the boulevard and a huge beach near the center of the island by the red school.
Don't miss the many interesting shops on Dauphin Island and you can even grab a fresh bite at the Lighthouse Bakery.
You may also want to venture just north of the island at the base of the bridge to the enormous fishing pier. There you may catch white trout, speckle trout, flounder, croaker and many others. It is fun anytime but it is really special at night under the lights.
For your convenience, there is a full grocery store including a deli/bakery about 10 miles north of the island. It is called Greer's Old Bay Market and they will have everything you need to stock up your home for your stay. Greer's also has a full ACE Hardware store adjacent to the grocery store.
