Detroit's enormous Eastern Market takes up six full city blocks, making it the biggest historic public market in the US. There's a wide range of items on sale here, from flowers and herbs, to art and jewellery, to local produce and gourmet snacks.
The sales sheds you see today were constructed in 1891, although markets had been operating in the area since the 1850s. The elegant, functional Victorian architecture and the entertaining street performers are worth the trip alone, but you'll find it tough to resist the dazzling array of wares on offer.
Explore the stalls selling fruit and vegetables, artisan meats, cheeses and much more. Chat to the vendors about the provenance of their food, much of which comes from their own farms, or ask to taste a sample. Grab lunch, a snack or a drink from one of the market's gourmet food stalls, bakeries, sweet stands or wine shops. Or if you prefer to eat indoors, check out one of the many eateries nearby.
After you've had your fill, head to the artisan stalls to pick up some locally made crafts, such as jewellery, clothes, soap and candles. The flower stalls are a delightful riot of colour and stock an incredible variety of blooms. Detroit's Eastern Market also plays host to the annual Flower Day: this celebration of summer is a truly breathtaking sight and is one of the largest flower shows in the country.
You can try to barter with Eastern Market vendors, but prices are generally set at a reasonable level. The best time to get a bargain is in the afternoons, just before closing. Don't forget to bring some cash as the vendors who accept cards are in the minority.
The Detroit Eastern Market is located approximately 2.5 kilometres from the centre of town. You can get there by bus or car, but avoid the middle part of the day if you want to ensure that you get parking. Come on Saturdays for the main market, or Tuesdays for a slightly smaller version.
