El Chorreadero featuring a river or creek and a waterfall

Swim in the pool of a beautiful waterfall, explore a network of dramatic caves and go rappelling at this grand canyon.

El Chorreadero is a magnificent natural landmark set on a river in the El Escopetazo region of Chiapas. This canyon features interesting rock formations, a pretty waterfall and a series of mystical caves. The spot is suitable for everyone from families to adventuresome visitors. Choose to relax amid the glory of nature or get active by trying thrilling sports.

The canyon’s waterfall emerges from a grotto and cascades down a cliff from a height of about 65 feet (20 meters). Its crystalline water spills into a large pool and then proceeds to flow into a series of smaller pools. Climb the stone stairway leading up from the lower pools to a viewpoint directly in front of the waterfall.

Sit on the rocks and appreciate the spectacular scenery. Gaze at the verdant vegetation and admire the different shapes of the rocks, formed over centuries by weathering and erosion. The pools are ideal for enjoying a refreshing swim on a hot day so bring your bathing suit.

Within the canyon is a cave system, parts of which are accessible without the need for specific equipment or guidance. Steps lead up the side of the waterfall to this section. Climb with caution and be wary of slippery rocks.

Travel deeper into the caves on a guided tour. You’ll get the chance to try rappelling and spelunking. Be amazed as you visit an inland lake and underground cascade. See the subterranean river that feeds the main waterfalls and pools.

The canyon is a 30-minute drive east of Tuxtla Gutiérrez or a 10-minute drive northeast of Chiapa de Corzo. Get here by catching a bus to Chiapa de Corzo, then take a taxi for the rest of the trip. Use the free parking available at the entrance to the canyon if you arrive by car.

Visit El Chorreadero any day. There is a fee to enter the site, which has changing facilities, a kiosk and a restaurant. The best time to visit is during the dry season of November to March.
