Glad we ignored the previous bad reviews! River paradise five hours from Denver Metro!
I almost feel I shouldn't leave this review in case this riverside retreat becomes so popular I can't slip out of the Denver metro for an idyllic escape at my leisure, but Donna and her little slice of heaven deserve it. Donna was a perfect host and afforded just the right amount of privacy and care of her guests. She's right next door to the home and available if you need anything. Even with it being overcast and Spring not quite setting in yet, we had a wonderful time listening to the river and drinking wine on the napping porch, and curling up next to a fire (both indoors and outdoors). Stargazing from the rooftop deck can't be beat and you will love waking up to the sunrise from the loft bedroom. If you're finding yourself suffocating in a concrete jungle, or need an intimate setting to getaway for a few days, this is the place to be. As a heads-up, the home uses radiant heating, which means heat comes through the tile floor and the home is warmed up that way. This is pretty typical for a lot of casitas and homes in New Mexico, so just be prepared to look for the dial on the wall and close the wooden window blinds at night if you need it to be a little toastier. No issues with cleanliness either -- this is a beautiful adobe in New Mexico, so expect some occasional dust and maybe the occasional bug no matter how much you scrub and sweep.

Such a beautiful, quiet spot, right on the Rio Grande River! Beautiful home and grounds. Nice area to relax outside and watch the hummingbirds and listen to the river flow by. In between Santa Fe and Taos. Local wineries that are fun to visit. Host was friendly and accommodating. Will definitely stay here when I come back.

This VRBO was a nightmare could not use the toilet. we should get our money back!
VRBO 229517 This property is in Embudo, New Mexico and the host is Donna Heinley. Pictures in your website show a beautiful home, nestled on the Rio Grande River. The reality was that the house was not useable and our trip became a disaster. We have stayed in lots of VRBO’s and never had a problem. This time, the condition of the house was so bad that we couldn’t stay there. The toilet overflowed on the first morning and we couldn’t get it to function . The host explained that no toilet paper could be used and had a sign stating, “please do not put paper in the toilet.” We had only been there a matter of hours and had not used the commode much when the overflow occurred that first morning. Toilet paper was not the issue. A functioning toilet is essential to the use of your rent-houses. We had to go outside to use the bathroom. Other problems include: ⁃ The house isn’t air conditioned (other than a small window unit in the bedroom.)We knew this. However, without opening the windows, it was unbearably hot. The problem is that there are no screens in the major windows and the house became infested with flies when we tried to cool off. ⁃ The house had numerous electrical issues, including bathroom electrical fixtures in the process of being repaired, with incomplete work left on the sink area. ⁃ The house was not clean, with a rodent nest under the outdoor grill, dust throughout the house and an unclean kitchen. My husband and I believe we should get our money back.

Beautiful place. Everything we needed and 1/2 way between Taos and Santa Fe, so easy drive to wherever your headed. Internet was a little wonky, but did not use much. Never turned on TV, because the view and River were enough!

Our stay was fantastic.
This long weekend trip was planned as a get away from stresses. We enjoyed what it provided as a relief from our normal life issues. The house was situated in a location on the Rio Grande that was very relaxing and had amenities that could lend itself to reconnecting to nature (patios for morning coffee or evening wine, wildlife that freely wandered about, mature trees for shade, seclusion for privacy and conversations with depth). Donna, our host was superb. Connected to us when necessary, but allowed for privacy as well. The house was uniquely designed for the southwest locale and for comfort. Unusual elements included the antique fridge and stove in the kitchen as well as spaces for family/friend gatherings in the interior spaces (several kivas and seating spaces) and the outside grounds that were meticulously manicured. The back screened bedroom patio was our favorite....the river noises all night were so relaxing. We hope to return in the near future.

Spectacular river location in a perfectly appointed home
It is hard to imagine a more lovely location for a home nestled by the river and between the mountains. The home is comfortable with great attention to every detail from the shutters to the stained glass. The house is completely appointed with all that you can imagine so it feels like home the moment you walk through the door. I cannot speak highly enough of this place, this home and how well Donna attends to every detail for a perfect stay. I look forward to returning soon.

Lovely stay
Can't say enough about this lovely home and extensive grounds. Beautiful, artistic and thoughtful decor indoors, and peaceful attractive vistas outdoors, the perfect combination. We did have some difficulty with the bath/shower - standing to shower is impractical due to spray flooding the floor, and sitting in the deep slippery tub is not safe for elders, so we wound up using an ice chest as a shower seat. Please consider adding shower curtain and bath seat. But that was a small issue compared with the pleasure of the fresh air, gently bubbling river, fine art, birds and wildlife (we spotted a racoon!). Four stars for cleanliness is for the kitchen stove, which could use a good scrubbing, especially around the vents.

Wonderful Time
We had a wonderful time! We do VRBO frequently, and this is probably the nicest place we have ever stayed. The house is as beautiful as pictured, and the property is stunning. There are several patios and seating areas outside, and we spent a lot of time just relaxing and enjoying the scenery. My husband spent three days fishing on the river - caught quite a few. We could have stayed longer, and in fact, we told several other people that this was a great place for a getaway. Pretty close to both Taos and Santa Fe. If we can, we will be back!

Beautiful and Secluded Oasis
This property is exceptionally beautiful and private and in an ideal location in NM directly along the Rio Grande river. My husband and I were looking for a relaxing getaway near water where we could enjoy the long holiday weekend before a busy workweek ahead and we couldn’t have found a more perfect place. The house was spacious and comfortable, the decor a gorgeous NM style with tile floors throughout. The amenities were top-notch including luxurious bedding and fluffy towels, and premium cushioned lounge chairs outside. We had dinner each night on the outside patio enjoying the sounds and sites of the river, and the gentle breeze through the mature cottonwood trees. The rooftop balcony was also a notable spot for enjoying the dark night skies and river views. The owner Donna was fantastic and went out of her way to ensure that our every need was met. We are very much looking forward to staying here again when the opportunity arises.
