Wander through an attractive parkland modeled on the gardens of a royal household and explore its archeological museum.

In a city known for its many lovely gardens, the Estensi Gardens stand out for their exceptional beauty. Spend an afternoon strolling along the wide pathways of this tranquil setting, stopping to admire the flowers, trees and water features.

The gardens were designed in the late 18th century by architect Giuseppe Bianchi as part of the expansion of Estense Palace. He was inspired by the gardens of Schoenbrunn, the imperial palace of the Habsburg family in Vienna, Austria.

Walk through the alley of hornbeam trees that circle the pond, then go over to the nearby lake to see swans and ducks. There are also several picnic areas here. Meander along gravel pathways that connect symmetrical patterns of hedges and planting beds with small trees and many different varieties of flowers.

Follow the paths to the top of the hill, a part of the garden known for its views over the city and toward the nearby mountain range. Look to the western side of the hill to see the old tower that was built to trap wild birds. Throughout the gardens, there are numerous benches, lawns and shaded areas where you can sit and relax.

The Estensi Gardens connect directly with the park at Villa Mirabello. It is worth continuing on to explore this English-style garden and its attractions. The large grounds surrounding the 18th-century villa contain rare trees, including a cedar tree that is over 150 years old from Lebanon. Inside the villa is the Civic Archeological Museum. Pay the entrance fee to see its collection of prehistoric and Roman artifacts. Among the items on display are objects from tombs and a necropolis.

The Estensi Gardens are in the grounds of Estense Palace on Via Sacco, a short walk from the city center. The gardens and palace are open to the public year-round and admission is free.
