Stroll along the lovely riverside Winter Promenade (Passeggiata Lungo Passirio) to see a few of Merano’s landmarks, including the Evangelical Church (aka Chiesa Evangelica or Evangelische Christuskirche). It dates back to the second half of the 19th century and is Merano’s principal Lutheran church. Beside being an important religious center, the Evangelical Church also hosts live music performances.
A bell tower crowned by a tall polygonal spire dominates the church’s facade. Note the statue of Jesus Christ, which looks down on visitors from a niche in the tower. A mix of circular-shaped and tall, narrow windows run along the sides of the building. The design came from Berlin-born architect Johannes Vollmer, a prolific church designer during the late 1800s.
Much of the interior remains in its original condition. Rows of columns topped by decorative capitals and arches frame the nave. Examine the biblical scenes portrayed on the stained-glass windows. One of the most impressive, set above the altar, is a rose window featuring an image of Jesus surrounded by cherubs.
From August to September the church becomes one of the venues for events during the Merano Music Festival. Listen to international artists perform interpretations of compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel and Antonio Vivaldi, among others. The church is a popular place to visit while exploring Merano’s riverside Winter Promenade. The adjoining garden is a pleasant spot to enjoy a break from the summer sun and has a small children’s playground. Metered parking is possible on the surrounding streets. The Puccini Theatre and Wandelhalle sun shelter are some other major town attractions located nearby.
You can visit the Evangelical Church daily. Admission is free, although donations are welcome. Religious services take place every Sunday.
