Located next to lakes and a small forest, this scenic sandy beach receives a refreshing breeze from the south.

Ferrando Beach is a picturesque stretch of sand just east of the historic center of the city. Scenic lakes and a forest with quaint paths and trails surround the area. The beach is on the large mouth of the Río de la Plata, a river that separates Uruguay from Argentina. It is south-facing, so you can enjoy a more refreshing breeze than on the western coast of the city. Visit this ideal spot for relaxing break enjoying sun, sand and water before getting back to the ancient landmarks in the city center.

Meander along the paths of the adjoining forest until you reach an opening that leads to the beach. Make the most of the glorious sunshine during the summer months and work on deepening your tan. Enjoy the cool breeze blowing from the south. If you are still too hot, take a refreshing dip in the Río de la Plata.

Although the beach is a popular destination, it can still be a great place to avoid crowds, particularly in spring and autumn. Take a trip on the ferry from Buenos Aires before a short taxi journey from the port in Colonia del Sacramento. Enjoy a few drinks at the beach bar and order pizza and fries. Rent a lounge chair from the restaurant. The water is safe for kids to swim in, as there is a beach patrol.

The beach is named after the family that owned the area at the turn of the 20th century.

Ferrando Beach is east of the port on the southern coast of Uruguay. It is near Cantera de Ferrando, a quarry-turned-lake. Take a 2-mile (3.2-kilometer) taxi journey from the ferry terminal or the main bus stop to the beach. Nearby attractions include Ferrando Park, just to the north, and the historical district, about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) to the west.
