4 Seasons of Mountain beauty. Only 6 miles from freeway, great family getaway.
Welcome to mountain paradise. Mile High and surrounded by the Los Padres National Forest. Four seasons of great outdoor activities including hiking, fishing (20 minutes away), scenic drives, hundreds of miles of off-road and forest service roads, birdwatching and star gazing and our place has one of the rare level yards large enough for full scale play. We have just made the property handicapped accessible with a lift and sleeping quarters on the main floor. We also added a seasonal theater space outdoors and a rec room/bunk house. 4 private bedrooms, 4 nice bathrooms, massive decks with views and privacy, bbq, large yard with volleyball/badminton net, separate yard for pets. Huge open floor plan downstairs ideal for entertaining. 75 inch 4K smart TV, fireplace, fully equipped chef's kitchen and a dining table that seats 12. Pets okay and a great place for pets. Great for kids. Fantastic weather, crystal air (smog doesn't come our way!) and 15 degrees cooler than the surrounding valleys. 6 miles from freeway on the very edge of "civilization." This 3500 sq ft home is ideal for reunions, snowy getaways and, being in Lake of the Woods, it's also convenient to pizza, deli, stores and restaurants.
The space
Everything about our place is well cared for. Carpeting, tile, floors, decks, interior and exterior paint and a redone kitchen and privacy deck. The kitchen has everything for a chef to create it all. The 2000 sq foot downstairs is, essentially, one giant open floor plan with the kitchen as the hub. It's amazing for get-togethers for adults, kids, etc. 75" 4K TV is amazing. We have Starlink Wifi and you can hook up any devices. The views from any window are of forest and mountains. Step out the door past our two giant sequoia trees and you are one block from trails that will take you to Canada or Mexico. Great hikes - we love the two mile loop into the forest - for you and your pets in the extreme southern arm of the Los Padres National Forest. Yes, it's a pet friendly house. You could park a dozen vehicles (we have!) Oh, we installed a new furnace and no need for aircon. If it gets hot during the day the downstairs is always cool and as soon as the sun sets, just open the windows and crank up the swamp cooler as nature cools it all down fast. And one thing that Lake of the Woods has that is awesome is you can walk to Mike's Pizza or Ray's Mountain View market. Mike's is a full on pizza and Italian food restaurant and delivers. Amazing pizza. Ray has a full deli and grill for sandwiches and burgers, great wine and beer selection, full liquor and not pricey.
Guest access
You get the whole house. We will lock a couple of the closets.
Interaction with guests
We'll have someone to greet you and show you around and answer any questions. It's all pretty straightforward but there will be someone nearby.
Other things to note
The mountain communities are a destination for folks from the cities of Bakersfield and Los Angeles year round. In spring we have amazing wild flowers and hiking. In summer we are much cooler than the valleys and the Falls are simply spectacular with the change in colors. Winters are when it gets really popular if there is snow!

We had an enjoyable family getaway. Peter was a gracious host and his property manager walked us thru all the details of the house and grounds. The house was spacious, clean, and comfortable with many amenities.
We had a fantastic time at this property! The property was perfect for our group of 25, with ample space for everyone to relax and enjoy themselves. The location was ideal, and the host was exceptional. He always responded quickly to our questions and ensured we had everything we needed. The provision of ample linens was a plus. We would stay here again!
Great for a large group. Loved the outdoor stage and lights. I wasn’t able to fill in other on who stayed, we were a church youth group. Adult leaders and teenage girls.
The house was just prefect for my party. The place was clean and fully stocked as stated. Peter was very accessible and communicated with me daily. I would recommend this house
We had our church's men's group have its annual retreat stay here. We needed a space that could sleep at least 14 guys and was far enough from home to feel like a retreat (we're from an hour away). This location fit everything we needed it to be!
This was an amazing place to come and escape the hurry of the world. We had a youth retreat here. With 25 people and it worked perfectly. Host was amazing. Very quick responses. We loved our stay.
We rented this place for a youth summer retreat. The place was wonderful. There was plenty of space for all 20 people that we had. The owner was super nice providing accommodations when we needed it. The check in and check out process was very easy and simple.
This is our group's second time at Peter's beautiful home and we could not have had a more wonderful experience! The attention to detail, cleanliness, and hospitality of Peter cannot be beat.
Thank you, Peter, we hope to be back soon!
We stayed for just one night in our way to San Francisco but this was a great place for us to rest with our dogs. The house isnt fancy but is clean and very big! Way more space than we needed but we enjoyed the cool weather (15-20 degrees cooler than in the valley) and loved walking to the market and deli down the hill.
Decided to take a 1 day/night trip to see some snow and leave the city for some R&R. Though we struck out on playing in snow we did have a great time up there. The house was very well kept and the host Peter, who was very nice and accommodating did a great job at making us feel welcomed. Will definitely be going back in the future.
Peter was excellent to work with. He and I communicated throughout the day and he came straight to the house when we arrived and gave us the grand tour. The house is spacious and we were easily able to separate the males & females between two floors with room for the adults. Lots of sleeping options and extra mattresses. Very quiet!
We are so grateful Peter shared his home with us. We were a bunch of 19 total. There were plenty of places to sleep, activities for young and old. Kitchen had almost everything one would need to prepare meals. Supplies were plentiful. Comfortable heating for cold nights. Enough room for all to eat meal at once. If you are looking for a modern, sterile, rigid type of place to stay, this isn't for you. This is like going home to visit type of place- comfy, cozy & relaxed.
The house was a perfect location for a large family gathering. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking. The house was spacious and comfortable. Peter was very friendly and kind.
We had a great time. There were 18 of us including 7 kids. There was plenty of room for everyone to sleep, cook, eat, and play. Peter the host was great.
We were a group that ranged from 8 to 11 people throughout the weekend - friends and family. Considering the various privacy needs, this place was great. Two of the bedrooms upstairs had private bathrooms and the other two (including the small single room) share a third bathroom. Out of the four bathrooms in the house, three had full baths (always a plus with kids). The three larger rooms had plenty of space for extra mattresses and each had it's own heating unit, so each could sleep a young family of four, at least. We comfortably had two families of four in two of the rooms on a combination of beds, futons, a floor mattress and air mattresses. There were two full air mattresses, a single air mattress, and a single portable mattress available as well as the beds in the rooms.
The outside space was a bonus as well. I didn't think we would use the volleyball/badmitton court, and I was wrong! Peter made sure we had plenty of sports equipment and that the volleyballs were in good shape. The second story patio was wonderful for getting away and having a morning cup of coffee or an afternoon glass of wine. Also wonderful stargazing!
The kitchen had nearly everything we could ask, with both a coffee maker and a single cup pod style coffee maker, and came supplied with the coffee pods! It was fantastic to get a quick cup before the morning pot was brewed. The only thing the kitchen lacked was enough spoons - who knows what has happened to them!
We had the fire going at all times, which kept the house nice and toasty, and we were supplied with plenty of wood.
The disappointment came because I had seen a picture of a hot tub and a comment about it on the website. This was a major consideration when I booked, so I was very disappointed when there was no hot tub. Peter explained that the hot tub had been gone for a year and that he was not aware of any indication of it on the website. He remedied the situation immediately and did all he could to make our stay enjoyable, as I know he does with all his guests.
As far as the surrounding area, we enjoyed the shorter hike in the nearby national forest as well as a trip into the Pine Club Mountain community for some browsing and coffee. Even though we didn't get the snow we hoped for, we were able to drive up to the nearby sledding area - at Mt. Pinos Nordic Base - about seventeen miles of partially mountainous roads. Altogether we had a wonderful stay!
We got snowed in and Peter generously allowed us to stay another night no charge. He helped us figure out how to de snow our cars and kept us updated about the road conditions.
Peter was friendly and communicative from day 1 (even before booking). He was flexible with our timing and helped give us detailed instructions because of the snow. The house was great; housed 15 of us easily. An easy drive off the freeway even with the snow, and a short walk up the block to some snow play. The heat kept us warm all weekend :) It was a fabulous weekend getaway. Would definitely recommend! Thanks Peter!
