St. Croix’s second-largest town features beautiful European-style architecture, a lovely beach and some exceptional dining establishments.

Stroll around the brightly colored colonial buildings of Frederiksted town center and learn about the island’s history with a visit to an old sugar cane plantation. Stand on the seafront and observe tropical marine life or dive into the warm, turquoise water from the town beach.

If you only have limited time in Frederiksted, head straight for the town’s main attraction, Fort Frederik. This striking red-and-white structure was designed to fend off pirate attacks and was also the site of the famous slavery emancipation in 1848. Enter the fort and browse exhibits focusing on the slave trade in St. Croix.

Don’t miss the Estate Whim Museum, located southeast of the town. The 18th-century stone house of this former plantation is outfitted with period furnishings and antiques, while the surrounding flower, plant and tree-filled grounds are perfect for a leisurely walk. Look for a small patch of sugar cane still growing here.

Spend an afternoon at Frederiksted Beach just north of the fort. Top up your tan on the sand or rent stand-up paddleboards and explore around the bay. Scan the clear water and try to spot the schools of fish that congregate close to the pier. Arrange a diving excursion to see seahorses.

Peruse the stalls and shops around town. Purchase handmade clothes and jewelry, and admire paintings and sculptures by local artists. When hunger strikes, take a seat at one of the beachside restaurants, which serve up super fresh seafood seasoned with hot Caribbean spices.

Time your trip to coincide with the third Friday of the month, when the Sunset Jazz Festival takes place by the sea. Bring a picnic and enjoy some great live music as the sun sets. Attendance is free.

Frederiksted is located on the west coast of St. Croix, a 15-minute drive from the island’s main airport. Find several hotels and inns here with options to suit a range of budgets.
