Charming stone cottage in Funchal | Casa Vinhas

Casa das Vinhas is one of three charmingly restored air-conditioned gems that sit within the 4-acre working estate of Quinta Vista Alegre where bananas and vines are grown and century-old tropical gardens are tended. Astonishingly, this oasis of tranquillity is found in the main tourist zone of Funchal, near the sea and Belmond Reid's Palace Hotel.

Converted from the old Billiard House, Stables and Factor's accommodation the cottage walls are of original stone and interiors are spacious, characterful and well designed with top quality furnishings and equipment. The large swimming pool is shared with the owner and their family (for a few days of the year this may include family children). The front patio is shaded by vines and a shared seating area, surrounded by banana trees, has 4 chairs, table & sun umbrella, the perfect place for some light reading or for enjoying an evening drink.

Casa das Vinhas is on the ground floor and sleeps 2 guests. Entrance is directly into the living/dining room which is furnished to a high standard, some pieces locally crafted from wood from the estate. The sofa, two armchairs and the dining table seat up to 4 guests (ideal to share with friends/family staying next door) and there are table lamps for reading. There is a TV with cable & satellite channels, including German channels. The corner kitchenette has electric hob, combined microwave/oven, fridge, toaster and kettle and plenty of crockery/serving/cooking equipment.

The bedroom (with double king bed) has a fitted wardrobe with drawers (and small safe), vanity section with mirror and an en-suite bathroom with large shower, basin, bidet and W.C.

A private, electric entrance gate leads to a shared secure car park and a short, cobbled driveway. Casa das Vinhas is entirely on the ground-floor, ideal for those less mobile.

Linen, bath & pool towels and weekly cleaning are provided. There is a shared separate laundry room with washing machine, dryer, iron and ironing board available for guests' use.

These villas in Funchal are adult only and do not accept children. The swimming pool may be used between 09:00 and 17:00. Free Wi-Fi and a Bluetooth speaker are available for guests' use.
Although air conditioned, an electric fan is provided in summer and a portable electric heater provided in winter months.

The 4 acre estate of Quinta Vista Alegre has been in the Zino family for 70 years, the owners being the third generation. The main house (currently occupied by the owners) was built around 1867. It is a working Quinta growing vines and bananas. Much of the garden was laid out by an English family, the Stanfords, between 1902 and 1912 and Charles Thomas-Stanford wrote "Leaves from a Madeira Garden" about his garden and the island.

Opposite the entrance to Quinta Vista Alegre (where the cottages are) is the entrance to Quinta Magnolia, previously an British Country Club which is now Government owned. Here you can enjoy beautiful gardens, a fitness circuit, and two tennis courts, all set in an area of about 40.000 square meters. Just down the street you have the two most prestigious hotels on the island, Belmond Reid's Palace, and the Savoy Palace. There are no other villas in Madeira that offer this mix of tranquil character and traditon with a central sought after location.
Nearby are other excellent hotels and a good variety of restaurants, cafés, bars, and small supermarkets. You can enjoy sea swimming at the public Lido about 1 km by foot, or you may just want to walk along the coast in this area. Funchal town centre is only a 20 minute leisurely stroll away (less than 2 kilometres).
Buses/taxis are close and frequent. A car is not essential but advisable to explore this beautiful island.

PLEASE TELEPHONE MRS. ELIZABETH ZINO ON 00351 963 209 483 AS YOU ARE ABOUT TO LEAVE THE AIRPORT Please print these driving instructions and have them with you when you arrive in Madeira.

If you have a car and are driving to your cottage, please follow these instructions. Using GPS will take you via old and less easy roads and unusual locations:
From the airport, take the motorway in direction of Funchal.
Leave at junction 9, signed to “Funchal, Hospital, and Porto” which you should reach in about 15-20 minutes. This can be tricky as you must be in the fast lane on the left and you bear left onto the slip road, which then curves sharply round to the right to join the other motorway merging from the right.
Continue down the hill to a big roundabout. Take the second turning off the roundabout, (i.e. straight on) leaving the Hospital on your right. (“Funchal and Av. do Mar”).
Carry on down a long hill to fourth set of traffic lights and turn right to “Lido”, over a wide bridge.
Immediately after the bridge, bear right up the hill, leaving a statue of a man flying through the air with a dove in his hand on your left, into Rua Dr Pita with Enotel (Quinta do Sol) on your right.
We are the “Quinta” on your left with three gates, 5, 7, and 9 at the top, behind a pink cement wall but the one way system obliges you to go up the hill to the roundabout to come down again and turn in to our dark green metal gate, number 9.
As you come off the roundabout the green gate is IMMEDIATELY ON YOUR RIGHT. (Look across as you come up to the roundabout). Someone will be waiting for you there but if not, please ring Buffy’s mobile (00351963209483) or whoever you have been asked to contact.
The gate is rather narrow and it helps if you can keep to the upper side on entering. Drive straight in to the parking lot on your left.

A charming oasis in beautiful Funchal City
Everything we were looking for in a home-away-from-home in Funchal. The hosts were wonderful and welcoming, the accommodations charming and clean, and the property is beautiful.

Peaceful Oasis
We really enjoyed our week at this beautiful property. The owner was very friendly and helpful. Would definitely return, but perhaps in spring or summer next time, when we could take advantage of the excellent pool and gardens. .

An oasis in Funchal
We stayed for two weeks in March. The cottage is clean, spacious, airy, comfortable, south facing and delightfully situated in a private estate. The owners are very pleasant and helpful. Their Estate is a pleasant 15 minute walk, all downhill, into town. If you plan to rent a car get a small one as the entrance to the drive is narrow and manoeuvering within the car park tricky. If you plan to do a lot of cooking get up to date with the concept of combi microwave ovens. We hope to return.

Paradise
The property was as described and provided a very comfortable base. The property is within easy walking distance of Funchal city centre and the restaurants and amenities of the Lido area. Please be aware though that, if you have any mobility or respiratory issues, it is a steep walk back! We hired a car, a Qashqui, which was on the large side for the awkward gateway and parking arrangement. It was wonderful however to have the independence of a car to explore the island! The property is on a working banana plantation and we loved seeing some of them being harvested. It was amazing to experience this so close to the city centre and we felt privileged to stay in this quiet and secluded spot with so much still on our doorstep! We stayed three weeks and the property received a thorough clean and new bed linen, towels etc each week.

Even Better.....
I must admit to a certain amount of anxiety on two counts. We had stayed at Casa do Feitor last year and I was concerned that a second stay could not match the surprising comfort of the first, and that perhaps the standards had slipped a bit with time. I needn't have worried. This is a remarkable property. I provides everything that we could wish for in a holiday home. Yes, it is clean, yes, it is very well maintained, yes, it is equipped to a very high standard, and yes it is very well located, being within walking distance of the centre of wonderful Funchal and yet having a privacy that you would only expect in a much more rural setting. But over and above all that there is a ambience to the place; a feeling of being in the right place. And this is accomplished without any feeling of being fussed over; Buffy is always available without being intrusive. I can recommend Quinta Vista Alegre cottages without reservation; the perfect context in which to explore Madeira.

Wonderful restorative retreat
This is a fantastic property, extremely well appointed and comfortable with everything we could possibly have wanted to relax, unwind and enjoy our first holiday together in ages. The furniture and fittings were of a high quality and made eating in (almost) as much of a pleasure as eating out. It was a perfect ‘love nest’ and provided a relaxed atmosphere to rejuvenate and recharge our batteries. It was spotlessly clean and the photographs and lay out provided are entirely accurate although, if anything, they undersell the charm and delights of the property and the area a little. The surroundings of the banana trees and vines around the cottage are stunning and waking in the morning with the soft light coming through the trees brought us a feeling of well being to start each day. The owners were charming and helpful, though very discreet. The little touches of flowers and fruit, wine and a personal welcome were all delightful and the dog - a sweetie. The property is centrally located and within easy walking distance of excellent restaurants, cafes and supermarkets and only 15 minutes walk into central Funchal itself. We had no transport but walked everywhere with no difficulty at all. We would have no hesitation in recommending this property, except that this may make it too popular and booking could be more difficult in the future. We have certainly found a retreat from our busy lives - we loved it.

Six Great Weeks!
We stayed in the “Casa das Vinhas” From January 25 to March 8, 2023 – Yes, 6 weeks! Lucky us! We thoroughly enjoyed the property. We are walkers; we walked over 600 km while we were in Madeira, so the location was ideal for us as it gave us a chance to warm up walking to the old town in the morning and a chance to finish off our days with a walk back up to the casa. The building itself suited our needs very well. It felt safe, secure, and peaceful and allowed us to relax and enjoy the tranquillity among the banana plants, amid the birds and butterflies and with visits from the 2 friendly dogs. The property managers were quick to respond to any minor issues as they came up and were a pleasure to meet. The housekeeper did an excellent and thorough job and the towels and bed linens are top quality. We cooked about 60% of our meals at the casa and had pretty much everything we needed, including the barbeque, which we did make use of. We never really figured out how to do more than just microwave with the oven but didn’t really need it anyway. Few rental units in Funchal have any form of central heat and we experienced some cold nights in January and early February. We made good use of the electric heater and hot-water bottle some nights! Other than those few nights, we were fine without a source of heat. All in all, we had a very pleasant stay!

Fabulous, loved it!!
We loved the property & having a pool was a real luxury as we pretty much had it to ourselves the whole stay. Our cottage was lovely, had everything we needed & the grounds were really pretty. We didn’t meet the owners until the end of our stay as they were away. A really nice couple who we instantly liked. If we ever go back which I’m sure we will we would definitely stay there again without a doubt. The location is great as it’s away from the town but close enough to walk in. An added bonus was that the owners have 2 lovely dogs who we adored as we a huge animal lovers

Fantastic little hideaway in the centre of Funchal
Enter Casa das Vinhas through a door in a wall...all very Harry Potter! It is very magical inside the walls. Peaceful. But...it is a working Quinta! Bananas surround you. The owners live closeby; they greet you and bid you farewell..but are there if you need anything. They are very lovely. You have everything you need. We hired a car but it did not leave the driveway. We walked everywhere. Loads of lovely places to see and lots to do. Restaurants and cafes abound. Don't hesitate to book! You will have a fab time! Good travels. Ann

Absolutely loved it
This property is a hidden gem. It’s situation is great as everything is within walking distance but it’s away from the centre. The cottage was perfect for our needs, it was very clean & had everything we needed. We had the swimming pool to ourselves which was a real treat. The grounds were lovely & we fell in love with vista & Minnie, the owners dogs. We didn’t meet Frank & Buffy who are great until the end of our stay as they were away. I would highly recommend staying here if you want something a bit special. We will definitely stay here if we go back again. They have their own taxi driver called Carlos who’s a real character & he will do the taxi transfers to the airport for a charge. He’s very informative on the area. We walked to the big supermarket once we had settled in to do a big shop & got Carlos to pick us up but after that there are plenty of little supermarkets nearer to pick up supplies. We loved staying here & cant recommend it highly enough

A genuine hidden Madeiran gem! Beautiful hideaway unbelievably in a central location within Funchal
Although we only know a few places in Funchal we are sure that The Cottage must be one of the best. We had an unforgettable stay on the island in particular driven by the cottage both in its location and grounds - and most importantly our hosts . Everything was as described or better and the view from the cottage onto the grounds is simply amazing. Absolutely terrific hosts and their property offers something genuine and magical to visitors; a rare find where the original Madeiran culture meets modern needs. Situated in a quiet quarter in the town there is only a short walk to the sea, restaurants and city centre. The Island is really overwhelming with incredible landscapes and architecture. Thank you once again to our very kind hosts. Highly recommended and we would definitely stay again.

Truly is an oasis in central Funchal
We had never been to Madeira before and booked Casa das Vinhas after much deliberation. We were not disappointed. The cottage is clean, the bed comfortable, the living accomodation is bright and the kitchen well equipped with very good cooking facilities, should you wish to cook. There is even a barbecue. The outdoor area is very spacious and the swimming pool is more than adequate. My husband and I had the full use of the pool to ourselves, very peaceful. We loved seeing the owners dogs, who were very friendly on occasion, and Frank and Buffy are very welcoming, helpful and discreet. It is a short walk down a hill to turn either left into the centre of Funchal and the port area, or right to the hotel strip, the first one on the main road is Reids Hotel, where you can book for a posh tea. There is a super market down the hill too. Turn towards the centre and you get an excellent meal at Kontiki's, steak on the stone, and a good pint at No2 Pub. Overall, an excellent base with peace and quiet, being amongst it all. We had a fab holiday. But, like all holidays in the heat, remember to take the sprays/creams in case you are bitten. We hope to return to this beautiful oasis, Pauline and Brian

Serendipity.
Serendipity is the first word that comes to mind when thinking of our recent stay here. Frank and Buffy have created a wonderful retreat within the grounds of their stunning property. The cottage we stayed in was very well equipped, stylishly appointent and wonderfully clean with thoughtful touches. The pool area was a particular favourite bordered with many flowers and vines. Plenty of space to sit out for breakfast and the mandatory G and T in the evening. You never felt you were in the middle of a buzzing city. When you did want to ventre out of the gated property there it was, the vibrant friendly city of funchal. Great eating places a short walk away, a great bakery just down the hill for your daily bread and the must have custard tarts. All this was topped by the caring approach of Buffy and Frank. There when you needed them and not when you didnt. Fabulous. A rare and special find. Would love to keep this place a secret but that would be really mean to deprive everyone of something that is unique. A special place one had the good fortune to come across. Go there while you can , not going to stay a secret for long. The last word. Serendipity.

Superb
Stayed here for 5 nights in late October. the cottage was well equipped and comfortably furnished, with an outdoor dining area amongst the banana trees. The pool was clean and just the right temperature for cooling off, with plenty of loungers available. The cottage is ideally located, with many restaurants within a 5 minute walk,as well as two supermarkets. Upon arrival we were greeted by the owner, having been collected from the airport by Carlos. The bottle of Madeira was a welcome touch and the kitchen was already supplied with tea bags.

Relaxing stay
Really enjoyed our stay in Casa das Vinhas. Top quality accommodation, styled really nicely and comfortably. Large pool with lounge chairs, sunny outside seating area to dine in, well located in between Funchal city/Port area and the tourist zone/Lido. We managed well without a car but you need to be able to manage a steep walk home. We weren't really disturbed by the road but it was hot sleeping at night without any air conditioning. Only 2 other cottages so it never felt over-crowded. Well stocked facilities which made a great home from home for our stay.

Perfect Getaway
On arrival we received a lovely greeting, which included a full tour of the property, an explanation of how everything worked and what we would find in the area. The property was in first class condition was everything we expected and more. Casa das Vinhas is in a really good location, close to the sea, with the old town in one direction and the "hotel quarter", in the other direction. Both of these areas have plentiful shops, restaurants and bars. The property is up a short but steep hill, but that is the nature of Madeira. At the bottom of the hill was a really nice patisserie and ice cream parlour, so you could refresh yourself before walking up the 100 metres or so. The Casa was set in secluded gardens with banana trees and grape vines surrounding the property. The Casa and the gardens were very well maintained and a joy to relax in after a day out.

Idyllic Location
This is the most perfect location. A scenic walk into Funchal takes about 15 mins which can take you through the fabulous gardens with some great sea views, it took us about 25 mins coming back as there are a few steepish hills to tackle but there is a bus stop near the gate if you prefer and we found local transport everywhere to be excellent. We were very impressed that once through the green door, the natural banana plantation setting for the cottages was like a being transported into another world and any traffic noise almost disappeared. The accommodation has been renovated to a very good standard and provides most things you could possibly want with an excellent sized swimming pool that, when we were there, almost felt like it was just for us. The bottle of Madeira wine and fresh fruit was very welcome and the only thing we thought lacking was books on the local area, flowers and wildlife, local bus service information and perhaps some books or leaflets on walking the levadas. There are so many restaurants to choose from to suit any taste you really are spoilt for choice and there is a patisserie and Spar shop nearby for your daily essentials. We found Buffy & Zino very welcoming and friendly hosts but not at all obtrusive. This is a very relaxing place to stay and we would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who likes peace and quiet together with the convenience of being close to everything. Thank you both for sharing your oasis in Funchal. David & Linda, Norfolk, UK

a wonderful holiday
We thoroughly enjoyed our week in Madeira at the Casa das Vinhas. It was our first visit to the island and first time ever staying on a banana plantation! The cottage is quaint, clean, airy, comfortable and well equipped with everything you need. The sofa is so comfy to lounge on after a good days levada walking! The location is great as you are only a 15-20 min walk from the centre of Funchal and yet you have complete peace and quiet at the property. There are plenty of restaurants and a couple of little food stores nearby if you don't want to go into the centre. We would highly recommend the cottage and Madeira as a holiday destination. The levada walks are fantastic and easy to follow, we saw whales on our boat trip, its easy to get about on the local buses and by taxi, the local food and wine is great - in short a wonderful holiday, we'll be back.
