Mingle with costumed period characters and experience the 19th-century agricultural and rural traditions of Georgia at this entertaining living history museum.

Visit the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village and be transported back to life in Georgia during the 1800s. Learn about the daily activities of the time at re-creations of farmsteads, mills and workshops. Shop at a general store, interact with docent interpreters and try completing rural tasks. The site has 35 historic buildings spread across an area of 95 acres (38 hectares).

Start your tour at the 1870s Traditional Farmstead, along with the community church, humble wood cabins and a school. Walk to the 1890s Progressive Farmstead, watch a demonstration of grain grinding at the Grist Mill and try turning grain into flour. Step aboard the Vulcan steam train for a ride to the Country Store. Shop for souvenirs at the store and browse peanut-related artifacts at the adjoining National Peanut Museum.

Return by train or on foot and explore the active workshops of the Industrial Sites Complex. Among these are a blacksmith, cooper shed, sawmill and turpentine still. Get an understanding of the wiregrass customs of South Georgia by strolling along Main Street. Find 19th-century pharmaceutical artifacts at the Drug Store, which also sells ice cream, root beer floats and snacks.

In the 1900s area, visit the relocated Victorian-style home of Captain H.H. Tift, who was a key figure in the development of Tifton. This area also has a cotton gin, doctor’s surgery and herb garden. Make a pass through the village’s art gallery, which hosts rotating art and photography exhibitions.

The museum is located about 2 miles (3 kilometers) northwest of Downtown Tifton. The most convenient way to get here is by car. Use the large free parking lot. Alternatively, walk here in about 45 minutes from downtown.

Opening hours of the individual attractions at Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village vary throughout the year. Admission fees are applicable. Check the museum’s official website for full details. Consider timing your visit to coincide with museum events, such as the Wiregrass Farmers Market and July 4th fireworks.
