Trace the 200-year history of the Gordon Highlanders from the Napoleonic Wars to today and discover the stories of the soldiers through displays and film.

The Gordon Highlanders Museum immortalizes the battles fought by the renowned line infantry regiment of the British Army. Dating back to 1881, the Gordon Highlanders have a fascinating history that earned them the title of the “finest regiment in the world,” as described by Sir Winston Churchill. Follow the soldiers’ footsteps and learn about their stories through captivating displays and films.

The museum is magnificently housed within the former home of the well-known 19th-century Scottish artist Sir George Reid. Enter the stately home, which is defined by its medieval-style pitched roof and turret. Check out the main exhibition situated in the Grant Room. You can trace the historic battles of the Gordon Highlanders on a timeline that stretches from the Napoleonic Wars to service in India, Afghanistan and South Africa. Learn about the role of the Gordon Highlanders in both world wars, as well as the Cold War. You can see interactive maps, scale models, regimental uniforms and medals on display. Check out 11 of the 19 Victoria Crosses that were won by soldiers in the Gordon Highlanders.

See a collection of historic weaponry in the Armoury exhibition. You’ll see weapons that date back to the 18th century alongside modern military rifles. See some of the arms that were used by and against the Gordon Highlanders, including swords, bayonets, knives and pistols.

Check out the ornate Lakin Room to see how high-ranking officers would have dined. You might coincide your visit with a temporary exhibition or educational workshop. Chat with the guides to get a deeper insight into the exhibitions.

Stop by the Duchess Jean Tea Room to enjoy lunch items, fresh cakes and pastries to go with your hot cup of tea. The museum’s shop stocks a wide range of souvenirs, gifts and informative books.

The Gordon Highlanders Museum is situated to the west of the city center and is approximately 15 minutes by bus from Union Square. The museum has an admission fee with discounts for children, seniors and students. The museum is closed on some Mondays and Sundays, depending on the season.
