"I wonder if this was a coaching inn back in the day as it's on the way into the city, but it's just outside the walls and on the end of Stane St, the Roman connection to the world eastwards. So it's an old rambling inn with many rooms in nooks and crannies. Our room was adequate, a twin as I booked late.It has a massive dining room downstairs to feed everyone, which it does in some style. We tasted the bangers and mash, with local sausages. The problem came in the morning when I wanted to leave...

"We stayed at the 'cottage' part of the hotel (converted garage at the back of the main building) which was perfectly fine once we found it - we checked in after the reception closed and the directions were not 100% clear. We phoned the night guard who was very helpful. The room was comfortable and clean enough, apart from some random cardboard left in the bin. The shower was not particularly intuitive but perfectly fine once we got it to work. There was a complicated- looking and clearly broken...
