Attend a dramatic performance in this historic 19th-century theatre and enjoy the views from the rooftop bar of the Arts Wing.

The Grand Theatre is a majestic hub of performing arts in the heart of Swansea. It has a 1,014-seat auditorium alongside several smaller studios with more intimate settings. Enjoy a play, pantomime or other type of theatrical performance in this historic building.

Admire the grand design of the theater’s exterior, which has abundant glass. Note the stylish red lettering spelling out “Grand Theatre.” Inside, watch a play or musical from the red seats of the main auditorium.

Purchase a spot on one of the balconies for a great view. Have drinks and refreshments at one of the Footlights or Grand Circle bars. They open before the play and during its intermissions.

Peruse exhibits in the Arts Wing, which was added at the end of the 20th century. Works of art and props for musical and dramatic performances are displayed here. Attend one of the regular comedy club shows featuring well-known acts. Browse the artworks in the White Room and the other two halls. Tables on the terrace of the Rooftop Café and Bar offer views of the city.

The theater is the home of the Ballet Russe, a dance troupe that trained in Russia. Watch their productions of classics such as The Nutcracker and Swan Lake. Several schools and theater companies hold classes and workshops at the theater.

Learn of the intriguing history of the site. It was designed by architect William Hope and first opened in 1897. Local opera singer Adelina Patti led the inaugural show. Hear about how the theater became a famous beacon of the performing arts in the 1930s before encountering difficulties and turning into a cinema. The city council launched a project in the 1980s to restore the theater to today’s pristine condition.

Purchase tickets from the box office, which is open from Monday to Saturday between morning and evening. Prices vary depending on the show.

The Grand Theatre is located next to the Quadrant Shopping Centre in the heart of Swansea. Nearby attractions include Swansea Mosque and Vetch Field. The River Tawe and Swansea Marina are about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) east.
