This local landmark and historic farm is now home to a top-notch animal reserve and a popular German restaurant.

A favourite with locals and visitors alike for over fifty years, Grant's Farm is famous for its Clydesdale Stables, animal parks, traditional Bavarian homestead and daily entertainment. It has a long and illustrious past, and was once owned by Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States. The Busch family brewing dynasty, who now operate the farm, have owned the property for generations, and are renowned for their old-fashioned Missouri hospitality.

Grant's Farm's 113 hectares are home to over 900 animals, most of which are located in either Tier Garten or Deer Park. The best way to explore Deer Park is by tram as you wind through the landscape you'll see herds of deer, bison and zebra. There's an eclectic variety of animals on display in Tier Garten, including parrots, reptiles and kangaroos.

Kids will love the Animal Encounters show, where elephants and other animals work with their handlers to entertain the audience. You can pick up a show timetable at the entrance. Those with children should also make sure to visit the petting zoo, where youngsters can get up-close with domesticated animals, such as goats.

Check out Hardscrabble, the cabin built by Ulysses S. Grant in 1855 and now restored to its former glory. Finally, stop by the Clydesdale Stables, home to 25 of the iconic Budweiser Clydesdale horses. Get your photo taken with these equine giants and their foals, and pick up some mementoes in the gift shop.

After all that fresh air, you'll need a good lunch. The Bauernhof, built by the Busch family 100 years ago in the style of a traditional Bavarian farmhouse, serves hearty German fare, such as bratwurst and pretzels. Beer connoisseurs over the age of 21 can round off their meal with some complimentary samples of Anheuser-Busch brews in the Hospitality Room.

Admission to Grant's Farm, including all tram rides and shows, is free. Parking is pricey, but you can catch a bus from central St. Louis if you don't want to drive. The farm is open Tuesday to Saturday in the summer, weekends only in autumn and spring, and is closed from November to April. Opening hours vary check the website before you visit.
