Admire this magnificent Buddhist statue of the mercy goddess Guan Yin, which towers above the South China Sea from a golden platform in the Nanshan temple complex.

The Guan Yin of the South Sea of Sanya is a breathtaking statue of the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin), the Buddhist goddess of mercy. The spectacular Guan Yin statue is the fourth tallest statue in the world and depicts three different faces of the serene bodhisattva. Visit this holy site to admire the impressive statue and see Buddhist monks pray at her feet.

The Guan Yin statue is situated in the Nanshan temple complex, on the island of Hainan in the South China Sea. Reaching 108 metres (354 feet) in height, the magnificent white and gold statue is taller than the Statue of Liberty in New York and dwarfs everything else in sight. Admire the statue from the long tree-lined promenade that leads towards the shore. Flowerbeds, tropical trees and flags decorate the path along the statue’s boardwalk.

Wander along the boardwalk and out to sea, where the statue stands grandly on an enormous platform. See the tranquil bodhisattva’s three faces. One side faces inwards to the nearby city of Sanya and the other two face outwards, towards the South China Sea. The faces of this guardian statue represent peace, wisdom and compassion.

The Guan Yin of the South Sea of Sanya is situated in the Nanshan Buddhism Culture Zone in Sanya, Hainan. Admission to the Nanshan temple complex includes access to approximately 50 square kilometres (19.3 square miles) of beachfront gardens, temples, monuments and statues. Some monuments incur an extra fee. The complex features a vegetarian food buffet. The Nanshan Buddhist Culture Tourism Zone is located approximately 40 kilometres (24.8 miles) southwest from downtown Sanya and is easily accessible by public bus and taxi.
