Discover a serene wilderness of cedar forests, rolling mountains and volcanic lakes in Hakone, a stunning getaway in the Kanagawa prefecture. Soak in mineral-rich hot springs, visit ancient Shinto shrines, explore serene lakes and relax in a traditional inn. Hakone is the ideal place to unwind and see some of Japan’s most iconic sights.
Hakone is surrounded by the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and criss-crossed with scenic transportation networks, making the journey just as captivating as each destination.
Take a ride on the Hakone Tozan Railway between Gora and Odawara, via Hakone-Yumoto. This scenic train weaves up mountainsides and through dense forest to connect many of Hakone’s popular destinations. Along this route, visit healing hot springs (onsen) and the Hakone Open Air Museum, a pleasant park where you can see sculptures, mountain views and an indoor gallery.
From Gora, climb aboard the Hakone-Tozan Cablecar and head toward Sounzan. The steep slopes above Gora hold the magnificent Hakone Museum of Art, with its collection of historic Japanese ceramics and peaceful gardens. Stroll through the museum’s moss garden beneath the shade of maple trees or visit the breathtaking Sekirakuen Garden on weekends. See a Japanese take on French landscaping at nearby Gora Park.
Don’t miss the chance to take in panoramic views from the Hakone Ropeway, a 4-kilometre (2.5-mile) aerial lift that connects Sounzan with Togendai. Take in views of Mount Fuji, the surrounding mountainside and the Great Boiling Valley of Owakudani, where plumes of steam coil up from sulphur pits.
In Togendai, you can board a sightseeing boat and explore the forest-fringed expanse of Lake Ashi (Ashinoko). Catch a pirate ship to Moto-Hakone and sail past the bright-red torii gates of Hakone Shrine. Those looking for a challenge can hike to the Mototsumiya Shrine at the top of Komagatake, one of Mount Hakone’s peaks.
Allow 3 hours to reach Hakone by train from Tokyo’s Narita Airport. Note that some of Hakone’s transportation options may close periodically during winter, but are replaced with shuttle buses. Purchase an Odakyu Hakone Free Pass for special discounts on transportation and other attractions.
