The massive shield volcano of Haleakalā, otherwise known as the East Maui Volcano, takes up a huge proportion of the island of Maui. It sits within the Haleakalā National Park and is home to the iconic Haleakalā or "House of the Sun" Crater. It's a steep hike up through the clouds to the top of Puʻu ʻUlaʻula, or Red Hill, which rises 3,055 metres above sea level, but the views are more than worth the effort. Watch as the sun's rays hit the majestic Haleakalā Crater, which spans an incredible 4 kilometres by 12 kilometres. During your hike back down through the forest and wildflower meadows, keep an eye out for the park's geese, rare birds and insects.
Haleakalā National Park is open 365 days a year and charges a small entrance fee to access the summit. The 56 kilometres of trails and roads around Haleakalā Crater are best explored by car and on foot. If you're hiking to the summit don't forget to bring warm clothing.
