The idyllic white sands and clear blue waters of this coastal stretch offer endless entertainment for visitors of all ages.

Hapuna Beach State Park is home to the largest white sand beach on Hawaii Island, the perfect destination for swimming, snorkelling or soaking up the sun’s rays. Next to the beach, you’ll find the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, with its sister hotel, the famous Mauna Kea Beach Hotel nearby. The park itself covers 25 hectares on the north-west coast, and offers excellent hiking trails to help you explore the surroundings.

Whilst many of Hawaii Island’s beaches consist of dramatic expanses of black sand, Hapuna Beach is a long stretch of pristine white sand. The size of this beach means that you’ll never be short of space to stretch out your towel, even when it’s at its most crowded.

In the summer months, the shallow water is warm and inviting. There is a protected section at the northern end especially for families with small children. However, the remainder of the beach is not sheltered from the open ocean, and during periods of high surf, especially in wintertime, ocean swells can lead to waves of 1 metre of higher as well as riptides. Swimming is supervised by lifeguards on patrol, but it is important to make sure you are familiar with the conditions before you venture out into the water.

If you are feeling brave, head to the south end of the beach to join the locals in jumping into the waters from the steep cliffs. Known as Lele Kawa in Hawaiian, the aim of this ancient popular sport, known as the sport of kings, is to make the smallest splash possible on entering the ocean.

Away from the ocean, you can explore the park along the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail. This 281 kilometre hiking trail traces Hawaii Island’s coast, crossing through the park and linking many ancient sites of significant cultural and historical interest.

Hapuna Beach State Park is located approximately 51 kilometres north of Kailua-Kona, along the Kohola Coast. Although there is a limited charter bus service to the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, the park is best reached by car. Onsite parking facilities are available. The beach is open all year round, and a small entrance fee is payable.
