Havelock North
Right in the heart of wine country, the Havelock North neighbourhood features boutique shopping and areas of sublime natural beauty.

Officially a suburb of Hastings, Havelock North has all the charm of a village combined with the modern conveniences of somewhere much larger. Hike up mountains and spend lazy days relaxing by the river. Set off on the wine trail to discover the stunning vineyards where some of New Zealand’s favourite tipples are produced.

Stroll along Napier Road and Joll Road in the center of town to find a selection of high-quality independent clothes and jewellery stores. Look for small, family-run bakeries and casual cafés alongside the boutiques. Enjoy a morning coffee as the quiet streets slowly begin to fill with people.

Wander east toward Tukituki River. Soak up some sun on the tranquil, grassy banks or go for a dip in the cool, clear water. For something a little more energetic, venture to Te Mata Peak, a 15-minute drive south. Amble up one of the rugged walking trails. Head for Saddle Lookout, which affords fabulous views east over the Tukituki River as well as toward the glistening Pacific Ocean. The summit of Te Mata Peak offers spectacular vistas of rock cliffs and valleys. Stroll through the forests to spot rare flora and falcons hovering in the sky above.

No trip to Havelock North would be complete without investigating the region’s rich wine culture. Travel southeast for a guided tour of the cellar at Craggy RangeOpens in a new window and visit the growers’ market that takes place on Saturday mornings in summer at Black Barn Vineyards.

The area is known for its family-friendly atmosphere. Festivals and street parties are hosted regularly through the year by the Food and Wine Classic.

Find Havelock North at the southern end of Hawke’s Bay, about a 10-minute drive southeast of central Hastings. This district contains various accommodation options. The coastal city of NapierOpens in a new window is about a 20-minute drive north.
